  2. I. Economic Imperialism • Europeans and Americans invested money in Latin America • Foreign investors sent money back home limiting growth • Borrowed Money • Many borrowed money from the U.S. and Europe • Pressure on those that were not paid back. Troops and ships

The Spanish American-War • 1898- disagreement over Cuba • War • The Maine exploded • U.S. declared war in April 1898 • Treaty of Paris • Spain gave up its claim to Cuba • Gave Puerto Rico, Philippines, and Guam to U.S. • Platt Amendment • U.S. granted a permanent naval base- Guantanamo Bay

  4. III. The Panama Canal • Failed French attempt • Yellow fever • Ran out of money • 1903 U.S. granted rights to build canal • Opened in 1914

  5. IV. The Roosevelt Corollary • TR said that if the independence of any country in the Western Hemisphere were in danger, the U.S. would act to prevent other countries from entering • U.S. would force Latin American countries to pay loans

  6. V. Mexico’s Revolution • Rebellion against Porfirio Diaz • Dictator who allowed foreign companies to take natural resources • Wealthy controlled most of the land • Indalecia Madero jailed causing rebellion • Civil War • Medero in power • Huerta betrayed Medero and took power • Carranza led a revolt against Huerta- won • Pancho Villa • Continued fight against Carranza • Attacked large land owners in Mexico to finance army • Led a raid across into U.S.
