  2. What exactly is a concept paper? A Research Concept Paper acts as a cornerstone for the dissertation writing process. It helps the Doctoral Committee to comprehend the research intended on the part of the doctoral candidate. It also allows the research candidates to present a blueprint or a summarised version of their proposed research to gain their approval. In other words, it provides an overview of the researcher’s plan of action. The length of a research concept paper can vary from 2 - 20 pages.

  3. How to begin with writing the concept paper? A concept paper should always be written as per the guidelines (for formatting etc.) of the research grantors.

  4. Step 1 A Show Stopping Title The title is provisional at this stage. The main intent of the title should be to capture the interest of the Doctoral Committee. Therefore, it needs to be an arresting one. So, make sure your title describes your intended research appropriately while grabbing the attention of your doctoral committee.

  5. Step 2 The research problem - significance, purpose and hypothesis (i) Explicitly state the problem which you intend to research about. (ii) Specify why exactly you pursued this research. (iii) Explain the significance of the problem. (iv) Also, discuss the objectives and the expected outcomes (hypotheses depending on various variables) of your research.

  6. Step 3 Background study/Literature review and Methodology Discuss in detail the previous researches undertaken in your area of research.Provide a brief overview of these researches and how they failed to make adequate contribution to the respective research. And, thereby, promote your idea of research as viable. Also, discuss about your proposed methodology i.e. your research design. What methods and techniques you intend to adopt?

  7. Step 4 Estimated budget (i) Discuss in detail the total cost of research. (ii) How will you allocate the resources/funds in different areas of the research?

  8. Important tips - 1. It is essential to include references for any kind of data you have cited in your concept paper. 2. You are required to state the deadline by which the project would be completed. 3. Research concept paper is not a piece of opinion. Therefore, a neutral and unbiased tone should be strictly maintained. 4. Pay special attention to the language of your concept paper. Never submit a concept paper without proofreading it.
