The Universal Account Number (UAN) was introduced by the EPFO to assist employees in managing their provident fund contributions in a better manner. The UAN, a unique 12-digit number, remains the same throughout the lifetime of an employee. Hence it provides a more viable solution than the EPF number that is specific to an employment.

  2. Universal Account Number Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12-digit number that is allotted to every EPFO member to access his or her EPF accounts. The UAN links all his PF accounts across organisations. It is issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Benefits of UAN: • All PF accounts can be unified using UAN • PF withdrawal can be done using UAN • Transfer of one PF account to another with the help of UAN • UAN card can be downloaded online

  3. Benefits of UAN: • EPF balance can be checked online or through SMS instantly using UAN • Does not require authentication of profile from employer • Track PF deposit from the employer, using UAN • Portable throughout your career

  4. How to get UAN: • EPFO allots PF number to employers • Employer includes UAN for employees who contribute to PF • Employees must submit KYC documents • Employer verifies KYC documents • New member ID is linked to UAN by employer

After verification, employees must register on the UAN website and activate it • OTP is sent to employee’s registered mobile number • After entering OTP, other details like date of birth, husband’s or father’s name, and other details must be provided • A new password must be set • Registration is complete and employee can view his or her updated EPF passbook
