  2. Ethnography • Walked around Cardiff town and noticed a lot of international students • They always tend to keep to themselves • Some looked lost

  3. Problem Identified • The problem that I identified is that people from other countries don't know the area well and they aren't interacting with residential students

  4. Secondary Research • £8billion a year to the UK economy • Life is a struggle • Vulnerable and often overlooked • Uni life isn’t easy Source- http://www.theguardian.com/education/mortarboard/2013/sep/12/what-its-like-to-be-an-international-student

  5. Secondary Research • It can get lonely • There is a study about how many foreign students are friendless in the US. • East asia have the highest dissatisfaction with personal relationships Source- http://chronicle.com/article/Many-Foreign-Students-Find/132275/

  6. Secondary Research • Undergraduates from china • 27 % - 3 or more • 38 %-no strong friendships • 17%- 1 friend • 18%- 2 friends Source- http://chronicle.com/article/Many-Foreign-Students-Find/132275/

  7. Secondary Research • 38% were not satisfied with the number of American friends • 27% were unhappy with the quality of those relationships. • 46% blamed it on shyness or poor English-language ability Source- http://chronicle.com/article/Many-Foreign-Students-Find/132275/

  8. Secondary Research Source- http://www.hesa.ac.uk/content/view/2663/393/ • Top ten non EU countries that come over the most • China • India • Nigeria • Pakistan • Bangladesh • Saudi Arabia • Malaysia • Hong Kong • Sri Lanka • Nepal

  9. Secondary Research • Why Asian students come over: • financial ability • fluent English and multi-cultural backgrounds • best education possible • A degree outside their country is more valuable than a degree in their own country • More chance they could get an ideal job Source- http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic71462.html

  13. Questionnaire

  14. Interview Why haven’t you found places that remind you of home? “I haven’t had the time to explore and I’m scared of getting lost” Have you heard of any places that remind you of home? “Yes I don’t know where it is”

  15. Target Market Gender: Both males and females Age: 18-23

  16. Target Market Profession: International Students Market Size: University Students R.R.P: App - £0.65 - £5.88 Touch screen interactive maps – £909 - £48,506

  17. Target Market Purpose • Haven't been in the area for very long • They don’t have time to explore the city and socialise with other people. • Saves them time instead of exploring and getting lost.

  18. Explanation of the problem in detail • International students from other countries come here for a good education and to experience a new culture. They are lonely, homesick and they haven’t been in the area long to know where places are to feel comfortable and to socialise with others.

  19. Detailed design brief International students are often alienated by the different culture and language barrier. In reaction to this a system or product should be designed to help international students locate areas in Cardiff. This solution should also notify whether student events or activities are coming up. This gives them the option to interact more with other students from the U.K.

  20. Thank You
