  2. The Events of the Resurrection • Moses Confucius Buddha Mohammed • Only Jesus is the Son of God…raised from the DEAD.

  3. The Gospel accounts of the Resurrection • All 4 gospels contain a resurrection account. • Each gospel contain DIFFERENCES.

  4. Evidence for the Resurrection • 1. Historic validity of New Testament- • 2. Consistent belief of the early church. • 3.Empty Tomb. • 4. Profound change in his followers.

  5. What is the Resurrection? • Cannot be easily explained. A Mystery • St. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15. • Gnosticism- salvation comes from secret knowledge. • -Gnosticism said we are BODY- SOUL (spirit) BAD GOOD • St. Paul writes- NO! • There IS a RESURRECTION of the BODY!

  6. Paul writes: 1. The Resurrection really happened. • Jesus wasn’t just SEEN, he APPEARED. 2. Christ’s Resurrection is PROOF of our resurrection. 3. Resurrected body is a transformed body. Not just a resuscitated body.

  7. The Resurrection Confirms: • Jesus is the Son of God. • Jesus’ teachings are true. What teachings? God’s love-no limit Fulfillment = loving Forgiveness > revenge • Jesus’ resurrection – Death is NOT the end.

  8. The Ascension • When did Jesus ASCEND? • 40 days after the RESURRECTION. • Why 40? • NOAH? • MOSES? • LENT?

  9. 40 Is a symbolic Biblical Number meaning… • A LONG time

  10. The Ascension • 40? • Jesus 1. taught the apostles about Scripture 2. they will continue his mission Jesus descends into HELL- Sheol – in Hebrew Hades – in Greek A place or the ABSENCE of GOD?

  11. SYMMETRY- events balance each other • Incarnation – leaves heaven to come to earth • Ascension- Leaves earth to return to heaven

  12. 3 implications • 1.Jesus has full authority over earth, heaven hell • 2. We all can spend eternity with God. • 3. By leaving earth, Jesus can be MORE present to us. This is a paradox.

  13. A paradox is a truth in a contradiction • Alone in a crowd • Not to decide is to decide • “Darkness declares the glory of light”

  14. 3 implications • 1.Jesus has full authority over earth, heaven hell • 2. We all can spend eternity with God. • 3. By leaving earth, Jesus can be MORE present to us. HOW?

  15. Jesus ascends into heaven…but never really leaves us. He is present in: • Eucharist • Scripture • Prayer • Family, Friends, service Jesus is free to be everywhere, with everyone…

  16. Doubting Thomas pg 121 • Thomas comes to FAITH in Jesus’ divinity after the RESURRECTION.

Difference between SIGNS SYMBOLS Many meanings (multivalent) Requires interpretation Organic (changing) meaning Appearance can evolve/change Many different things to different people • One meaning • No interpretation • Static (unchanging) meaning • Appearance doesn’t change • Means the same thing to all
