  1. What is the UPSC Civil Service Exam? Civil Service Exam is an exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year to recruit officers for All India Services, Group A and Group B services. It is a National level exam conducted in 3 stages Prelims, Mains and Interview for selecting suitable candidates possessing Officer-like-qualities.

  2. What is IAS Exam? Indian Administrative Service or IAS is the most sought for competitive examinations that can give your career a big lift. This examination, which recruits to various Civil Services of the Indian Government, is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Exam pattern The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a three tire examination for recruitment of the various IAS positions. These three tires are- • A preliminary exam (which is generally conducted in the month of June), • Mains examination (which generally takes place in November or December) and • Lastly the personal interview round (which is conducted in March).

The final result of personal interview (declaring list of candidates who are selected to serve in various civil services positions of the Indian Government) is published in the month of May Prelims exam is more of preliminary scrutiny of the IAS aspiring candidates and hence the marks secured in prelims are not counted for ranking. However, you should not take your prelims examination for granted. The ranking is based on the marks that you obtain in mains and personal interview. Prelims contain objective type questions asked from two papers- General Studies and CSAT. Mains contain nine papers (including two optional papers for the candidates to choose). In mains English language and regional language, papers are qualifying in nature.
