Mass • Word & Eucharist • Eucharist is “source and summit” of the Catholic Life. • “Eucharist” means thanksgiving • It if primarily a “Sacrifice” • Also, a meal and a commemoration of Our Lord’s Resurrection • The Eucharist is also called the “Blessed Sacrament.” • Catholics must go to Mass on Sat evening or on Sunday.

Vestments for Mass • Amice: a small linen cloth, which covers the priest’s shoulders • Alb: a white linen tunic of full-body length • Cincture: a cord used to fasten the alb at the waist • Maniple: a strip of cloth worn about the neck and crossed on the chest • Chasuble: the outer garment, which hangs from the shoulders • Dalmatic: the outer garment worn by deacons in place of a chasuble

  4. Liturgical Colors • Green: Ordinary time • Purple, or violet: Advent and Lent • Red: Feasts of the Apostles and martyrs • Rose: Gaudete Sunday (3rd Sunday of Advent) & Laetare Sunday (4th Sunday of Lend) • White: Christmas and Easter • Black: mourning

Liturgical Vessels • Chalice: the cup used for Consecration • Paten: plate used for holding the bread of Consecration • Ciborium: shaped like a chalice, but it is used to hold the hosts distributed at Communion • Cruets: containers for the water and wine at Mass • Monstrance: a portable container used to display the Blessed Sacrament at Benediction

Liturgical Linens • Corporal: a square linen cloth, placed on the Altar, & used as a resting place for the sacred species during the Mass • Altar cloth: a white cloth, often linen, used to cover the altar table. • Pall: a square piece of starched material, usually linen, used to cover the chalice • Purificator: an oblong piece of cloth, usually linen, used for cleaning vessels after Communion
