  1. The year 2000 • New Year’s Celebrations worldwide • Y2K - The Year 2000 problem (also known as the Y2K problem, or simply Y2K) was a problem for both digital (computer-related) and non-digital situations which resulted from the practice of abbreviating a four-digit year to two digits.

  2. September 11, 2001 • 19 hijackers took over 4 commercial airline flights with the intent of crashing them into buildings. Three of them made it to their intended targets: The World Trade Center Towers, and the Pentagon. • The fourth plane crashed in a field in rural Pennsylvania. The passengers of that flight fought with the hijackers to take over the plane and it rammed into the ground.

  3. …September 11 • Some facts about that day: • The terrorists picked flights going across the US because they were filled with jet fuel. They learned to fly airplanes at a flight school in Florida. • Why the trade centers? • Height, location, but also because they were a symbol of the capitalist society of the US

  4. Al Queda attacks after 2001 There is a much longer list, but notable ones are: • London, UK - 7/7/2005: suicide bombers on buses during morning rush hour. 52 dead. 700 wounded • Madrid, Spain - 3/11/2004: bombs on commuter trains. 191 dead, 1,750 people wounded.

  7. Music of the millennium • Heavy Metal/Rap Metal • System of a Down, Evanescense, Slipknot • Post Grunge: • Nickleback and Puddle of Mudd Also pop-punk bands in the1990s, such as Green Day, Weezer, Blink-182 and The Offspring, also continued their success during the 2000s.

  8. Pop Music • Boy bands from the 1990’s: Some members of these bands go on to have successful solo careers, such as Jesse McCartney and Justin Timberlake. A new strain of boy bands take place shortly around 2008, but never really became as glamorized as they were at the beginning of the decade, with an exception for the Jonas Brothers.

  9. Female Pop • Girl groups as well continue to become popular from the 1990s, with groups such as Destiny's Child, Pussycat Dollsand many others, but they were not as successful as the boy bands. Disney executives even try to mold girl groups as well, such as The Cheetah Girls.

  10. Teen Pop • After 9/11, a new "teen pop-rock " movement began. While girl pop-rock singers such as Alanis Morissette and Jewel were popular in the 1990s, they had declined in popularity after 1998 when the pop princesses such as Britney Spears debuted.

Avril Lavigne was arguably the first and lead artist to take this new direction in pop music, with hits such as "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi", "I'm With You" at the beginning of the decade and "Girlfriend" at the end Lavigne leads this genre throughout all the decade worldwide, her contemporaries such stars as, Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton not far behind with their own success

  12. Other prominent girl pop-rock artists of the 2000s included Pink, Hilary Duff, and Ashlee Simpson. Later artists reflecting the genre include Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, and Taylor Swift.

Jennifer Lopez • In 2001 triple-threat entertainer Jennifer Lopez debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart with her J.Lo album and in addition her film The Wedding Planner opened at number one at the box office at the same time making her the first actress and singer in history to have a film and an album, at number one in the same week.

  14. Other artists • Artists such as Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue and Madonna experienced revived success. Justin Timberlake shot to stardom with his Justified album. In 2005, Cher ended her 3-year long "Farewell Tour" which became the highest grossing female and solo tour at that time.

  15. American Idol • American Idol winners become a big part of the American pop sound, but only one winner became a staple. Kelly Clarkson experienced huge success and tons of hit radio singles with her pop-rock sound including worldwide hits "Breakaway", "Since U Been Gone", "Behind These Hazel Eyes", and "Because of You" at the middle of the decade. • Other artists: Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparx, Jennifer Hudson.

The Disney Channel • Children's music rises significantly in sales, especially with Disney (The Cheetah Girls, High School Musical, Hannah Montana: The Movie, and The Jonas Brothers among others). All The Cheetah Girls, High School Musical and Hannah Montana albums were among the best-sellers of 2006 and 2007 and reached the number 1 position, left many artists produced by Disney in the 2000s, The Cheetah Girls, Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Raven-Symoné, the artists of the best-selling Disney's decade of 2000s.

  17. Internet people • Internet personalities (people whom were primarily famous as a result of the Internet) such as Justin Bieber and Soulja Boy Tell Em enjoyed success in the pop charts. During the 2000s many different internet personalities were discovered by fans on the internet, and as a result were signed and gained much success in the charts.

  18. The musical style of the 1980s influenced pop music to some extent in the later stages of the decade, as seen in Rihanna's hit "S.O.S." (a sampling of "Tainted Love"), Flo Rida's "Right Round", a reworking of the Dead or Alive hit "You Spin Me Right Round". Other hits include Aaron Carter's cover of Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy", and Britney Spears' covers of "My Prerogative" and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll". • Beyoncé's hit "Sweet Dreams" was not a direct sampling of an 80's pop hit but Anne Hagerty of Billboard magazine was quoted saying; "this track will fit rite on a Michael Jackson or Madonna instrumental. • Alien Ant Farm covered Jackson's "Smooth Criminal”

  19. Lady Gaga • Lady Gaga took the later part of the decade by storm and revived the electronic influence of pop music that was not prominent since 2000. Her debut album, The Fame, was released on August 19, 2008. It reached number-one in Canada, Austria, Germany, and Ireland and topped the Billboard Top Electronic Albums chart. Its first two singles, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face", became international number-one hits, topping the Hot 100 in the United States as well as other countries. The album later earned a total of six Grammy Award nominations and won awards for Best Electronic/Dance Album and Best Dance Recording. By the fourth quarter of 2009 she had released her second studio album The Fame Monster, with the global chart-topping lead single "Bad Romance".

EMO • Emo broke into mainstream culture in the early 2000s with the platinum-selling success of Jimmy Eat Worlds Bleed American (2001) and Dashboard Confessional's The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most (2003) The new emo had a far greater appeal amongst adolescents than its earlier incarnations. At the same time, use of the term "emo" expanded beyond the music world, becoming associated with fashion, hairstyle, and other aesthetic attributes of culture.

  21. In recent years the term emo has been applied by critics and journalists to a variety of artists, including multi-platinum acts such as Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance and disparate groups such as Paramore and Panic at the Disco, even when they protest the label.

Black Eyed Peas • The Black Eyed Peas are an American hip hop group from Los Angeles. • As of 2008, the group is composed of will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo and Fergie. • Since its breakout album Elephunk in 2003, the group's pop/dance-oriented style of hip hop music has sold an estimated twenty-seven million albums and singles worldwide.

  24. OutKast • OutKast is a American hip hop duo based out of East Point, Georgia, a city south of Atlanta, Georgia. The duo was originally known as The OKB (The OutKast Brothers) but later changed its name to OutKast. The group's original musical style was a mixture of Dirty South and G-Funk.

  25. OutKast • Since then, however, funk, soul, pop, electronic music, rock, spoken word poetry, jazz, and blues elements have been added to the group's musical style. The duo consists of Atlanta native André "André 3000" Benjamin (formerly known as Dré) and Savannah, Georgia-born Antwan "Big Boi" Patton.

  26. OutKast • The duo is one of the most successful hip-hop groups of all time, having received six Grammy Awards. Over 25 million copies have been sold of Outkast's eight releases: six studio albums, a greatest hits release, and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, a double album containing a solo album from each member. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is one of only three hip-hop albums to be certified Diamond in the U.S. for shipping over 10 million units. Along with Outkast's commercial success, it has maintained an experimental approach in their music and is widely praised for its originality and artistic content.

  29. Gwen Stefani • Stefani is the lead vocalist for the rock band No Doubt. Stefani recorded her first solo album Love. Angel. Music. Babu. in 2004. The album was primarily inspired by music of the 1980s, and emerged a success with sales of seven million. The album's third single "Hollaback Girl" was the first U.S. digital download to sell one million copies. Stefani's second solo album, The Sweet Escape (2006), yielded "Wind It Up", "4 in the Morning" and the highest-selling single "The Sweet Escape”. Including her work with No Doubt, Stefani has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide.She won the World's Best-Selling New Female Artist at the World Music Awards 2005.

  30. Gwen Stefani • In 2003, she debuted her clothing line L.A.M.B. and expanded her collection with the 2005 Harajuku Lovers line, drawing inspiration from Japanese culture and fashion. Stefani performs and makes public appearances with four back-up dancers known as the Harajuku Girls dancers. She married British grunge musician Gavin Rossdale in 2002 and they have two sons. Billboard magazine named Stefani thirty-seventh Hot 100 artist of the decade. Stefani was ranked the 54th best artist of the 2000–10 decade by Billboard.

  31. Girls with Attitude: P!nk • Alecia Beth Moore (born September 8, 1979),[2] professionally known as P!nk (Pink), is a two-time Grammy-winning American singer-songwriter who gained prominence in 2000.

  32. P!nk • Pink released her first single 'There You Go' and first record, the R&B-oriented Can't Take Me Home, in 2000 via LaFace Records. Her pop rock-based second studio album, M!ssundaztood, was released in 2001 and is her biggest seller to date, featuring the chart-topping hits 'Get The Party Started' and 'Just Like a Pill'.

  33. Pink then followed up her 2001 album with 'Try This', in 2003. After a bit of a break from music, she returned in 2006 with her fourth album 'I'm Not Dead' which spawned 7 hit singles including 'Stupid Girls', 'Who Knew' and 'U & Ur Hand'. Her fifth album, 2008's Funhouse, was released in October 2008, and has been preceded by her first solo number one ever on the Billboard Hot 100, "So What".
