  8. Who is the Core Competency Framework for? • All nurses and midwives • Including pre-reg nursing and midwifery students • Those workers who support nurses and midwives • Can be a reference to other healthcare staff

  9. Points to remember It is important that the membership of any Health and Social Care team – clearly understand their responsibilities in safeguarding children and young people and are able to recognise and take effective action where there might be a need for protection.

Levels of responsibility - Basic to level 3 • Basic Awareness Level – appropriate to all healthcare workers who support nurses and midwives • Level 1- Registered Nurses and Midwives • Level 2- Registered Nurses and Midwives working with children, young people and/or their parents and cares where there is a potential safeguarding issue • Level 3 – Nurses working in roles where specialist knowledge of safeguarding is required

  16. The purpose of the SBNI is to coordinate and ensure the effectiveness of what is done by each person or body represented on the Board for the purposes of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Accountability • Political • Public – meetings held in public with confidential matters deferred to a confidential session • Organisational • Professional Chairperson reporting directly to Minister is expected to demonstrate: • Independence • Adherence to legislative principles and guidance • A difference

Committees of the SBNI Legislation requires: • 5 Safeguarding Panels, co terminus with Trusts • Child Death Overview Panel (CDOP) • Case Management Review Panel Amongst other issues the Board will consider; • Policy and Procedures • Communication • Education and Training • Effectiveness • Governance

Nursing & AHP representation supported by: • Membership of SBNI: • Mary Hinds, Director of Nursing & Allied Health Professionals • Una Turbitt, Designated Nurse • Organisational governance arrangements and participation in Safeguarding Panels • Regional Nursing & AHP Safeguarding Children Committee
