  1. 1. The Kingdom is Near Mark 1:1-15 p. 922

  2. Good News • Gospel of Mark • We’re going to draw close to Jesus • Based on Peter’s stories and preaching • Fast-paced, full of action • About Jesus the Messiah and his Kingdom. • Hard to grasp: • Grasped slowly and incompletely ... Only by a few. • Jesus blames it on lack of faith and hardness of heart. • Jesus’ identity & purpose don’t make worldly sense

  3. 1. Baptism in the Holy Spirit • Mark goes back to the prophet Isaiah • Composite quote – Malachi 3:1 & Isaiah 40:3 • Talk about a preparatory messenger – John the Baptist. • That’s where the story of Jesus begins • Part of One great Cosmic Plan to save the world from sin. • Jesus is the crucial, central part of the plan. • His story begins with a messenger • We are told about his fashion sense and his message • 2 Kings 1:8 - this is Elijah • Mal 4:5 “I will send the prophet Elijah ...” • Many false Messiahs (E.g. Acts 5:37-38)

  4. 1. Baptism in the Holy Spirit . . . • John’s core message: • greater one ... will baptise with the Holy Spirit • (email about the work of the Holy Spirit) • Must be clear about what we know from Scripture. • The Holy Spirit is integral to the Kingdom Jesus is bringing • He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit • Yes Please ! • Jesus immediately sent to do battle with Satan (v 12, 13) • Have to pay close attention to details

  5. 2. Repent • The Kingdom of God has come near – • “REJOICE and believe ...” NO • “RELAX and believe ...” NO • “REPENT and believe the good news” • John the Baptist – baptism of Repentance • Repent • Change the way you behave, think, live. • Turn your life completely around. • No way to “mix-and-match” our stuff with God’s.

  6. 3. Believe • We know this part – Have faith. • What Jesus means not as easy as we may think. • Not just acknowledging some facts about Him Asking us to revise completely our perception of reality • Craig Gay: “Why it’s tempting to live as if God doesn’t exist” • God is real and is actively working in the world – • Even my little world

  7. Getting it right • What don’t we get that keeps us from experiencing the fullness of what Jesus came to do? We neglect one or more of these three things. • Believe – a conviction at the centre of our lives • The Holy Spirit – Greatest blessing this side of eternity • Repent – living in daily openness to God’s voice.

  8. Recommend . . . • Read Mark for yourselves. • “Open door on Mark” Philip McFadyen
