  3. Background • 2000 Firescope sponsors two GIST classes in California • 2001 David DelSordo (NPS) brings national focus • 2002 Geospatial Training Advisory Group (GTAG) formed • 2003 Three classes delivered • 2004 GTAG becomes a part of NWCG under IRMWT

Background - continued • 2005 ArcMap becomes primary software • 2006 GSTOP standards implemented • 2006 S-341 number assigned to course • 2006 GIS Specialist becomes “GISS” • 2006 GISS Taskbook approved • 2006 Course materials revised to meet national standards • 2007 S-341 Course material approved by NWCG

Current Status • Since 2002 more than 500 students have taken S-341 in 17 classes • Logistic support provided by the BLM National Training Center in Phoenix • Over 40 individuals have served as faculty members from 5 federal & 5 state agencies • 2007 – 3 classes: Oregon, Idaho, & West Virginia

  8. Course objectives • Give students tools to adequately support incidents • Develop and maintain diverse course faculty • Keep course content current with technology, standards and business needs • Hold classes in all geographic areas around the country

  9. Future Direction • 2008 – 2 classes: Tennessee & Colorado • Continue to sponsor national classes • Continue to refine S-341 curriculum • Continue to support regional classes under approved conditions

  10. We are successful if: • Local units have GIS support for extended attack incidents • All Type I & II incidents have GIS support • All-Risk incidents have improved GIS support • GIS products are produced following national standards
