  1. Professional Milestones: These are the professional achievements for which I am most proud. Directed radioecology research at Chernobyl for 12 years. I was the first U.S. researcher given full access to the contaminated regions known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. I continue to work at Chernobyl, and have made dozens of trips there since 1992. In 1997, I proposed the construction of the International Radioecology Laboratory in Ukraine to foster research into the biological and sociological impacts of the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident. Funds were awarded for building the laboratory in 1998. Construction of the International Radioecology Laboratory (IRL) was made possible by a joint agreement signed by Vice President Al Gore and President Leonid Kuchma in July, 1998. Over $2M was awarded from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy for building, equipping and staffing the IRL. Maintained funding for Chernobyl research every year since 1991. I was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Secretary of the United States Department of Energy, Federico Pena, for humanitarian aide to the country of Ukraine. I was named a Distinguished Alumnus Award winner by the University of Oklahoma College of Arts and Sciences. I have published about 120 manuscripts in the scientific literature.
