Charlemagne • Charlemagne-from Latin carolusmagnus, Charles the Great • Charles king of Franks • Crowned king in his mid-twenties in 768 • For over thirty years, he crisscrossed Europe and waged war on the Muslim invaders from Spain, the Avar invaders from Hungary and the myriad German princes. • Charles was protector of the papacy and Pope Leo II crowned him emperor of Western Europe.

  5. Byzantine Empire • The era is commonly called early “medieval” or middle ages. It comes after Greek-Roman civilizations and before the Renaissance movement.

  6. Early Medieval Europe 300-1000 • Constantine reunited the Roman Empire, but the union did not last long. • The empire was permanently divided into an eastern and western half. Both areas were invaded by westward migration of Germanic people. • Britain, Spain and North Africa all were invaded by the Germanic people. • Their warlike chiefs overwhelmed Roman forces.

  7. Western Roman empire is split up. • Franks held Gaul • Visigoths held Spain • Saxons held Britain • Angles held Britain • The Latin language became ‘butchered’ in which evolved into Romance dialect-Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian.

  8. Europe divided roughtly into three linguistic zones: • 1. Countries in the west and south spoke the Romance languages • 2. Countries in the north and center spoke Germanic and Scandinavian languages. • 3. Countries that were located in the east were speaking Slavic languages.

  9. New Invasions of Arabs and Berbers • 711 a raiding party of Arabs and Berbers invaded Spain pushing the Christians into the Pyrenees Mountains. They were able to get as far north as Tours which was located less than 150 miles from the English Channel.
