Introduction to Communications • CO 101F 3 credit hours Fall 2006 • Mrs. Wood, Associate Professor • Office: FAB 414 Telephone ext. 6752 • Email: ewood@landmark.edu • Class is in EAB 004 • Class Meeting Days: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday • Office Hours: Every Tuesday either in my office in FAB room 414 or in the classroom • Grading Criteria • Grades are based on the following: • Participation 15% • Test/Quiz Grades 35% • Homework/Written Work 15% • Presentations 35% • If you do not pass this course you will receive an IP grade which means you take this course again in the spring. • Text: Communication Mosaics: An Introduction to the Field of Communication, 4th edition by Julia T. Wood There will also be additional readings provided by the instructor throughout the semester • Materials: • Master Notebook with Sections: Tests/Quizzes, Presentations & Evaluations forms, Homework, Handouts & Notes • Highlighters & Pens • Daily planner.
Course Description and Course Objectives • Course Description: This survey course enables students to increase their effectiveness and precision as public speakersand members of seminars and groups. Students explore how their perceptions influence the manner in which they communicate and how to use a wide variety of listening skills. They become aware of how verbal and nonverbal language can alter, detract from or enhance messages. Students also employ a variety of language strategies that promote inclusion, honesty, conflict resolution and support from within a group. This class meets CO core graduation requirement. • Course Objectives: The objective of this class is to introduce you to the many ideas and concepts of communication. By the end of the semester you should be able to master the following skills: • Be an active participant in class discussion and work well with your classmates and instructor. • Prepare well planned oral presentations using an effective process, also using presentation aids, such as PowerPoint, and be able to self evaluate your presentation. • Demonstrate a strong understanding and engagement in the class content and be able to make the connection between your own experiences and the field of communication and its theories.
Policy’s & Support Services • Attendance Policy • Attendance is expected at every class and in the rare event that you are absent the college policy will be followed. • The College Policy states that any student who misses the equivalent of two weeks worth of classes can be withdrawn from the class at the discretion of the instructor, and in accordance with established education program protocol and procedures. For this class it equals 8 absences. • Arriving on time is essential for the class to get started in a timely manner and for there to be minimal class disruption. • Make-up work Policy • If you miss a test or presentation you have to set up a time with-in two weeks of the initial due date to make up the assignment with the instructor. • Use of Support Services • It is highly encouraged that you use one of the support centers located on the first floor of the EAB to assist you with any work completion issues, reading comprehension difficulty or for any other academic issue that may come up in addition to using the office hour time with me.
