ROSS, Director Children’s Services JAN HOLCOMB Volunteer Coordinator Suzanne Baker is, for many reasons a “Jesse’s Angel,” Susie is always willing and able to give time and energy for any particular need, activity, fundraiser, or special event, no matter what day or time. Susie has worked at information booths, selling tickets, passing out flyers, serving food, conducting silent auctions or any other activity where volunteers can assist. Susie has volunteered since may 1988 and says she “loves everything about volunteering.” She adds, “if I can help someone, I help myself many, many times over!” She is truly an asset to our volunteer program and deserves to be recognized and commended for her fantastic community service.

ROSS, Director Children’s Services JOAN MATLOCK LANG Volunteer Coordinator Ruth Dorn has been a volunteer with the Foster Youth Mentor Program since 1994. Ruth became a mentor to Jacob, age 8 in December 1994. Ruth has been the single constant and stabilizing force in Jacob’s young life. He has grown to depend upon their special relationship and, most importantly, to know the value of a true friendship. Ruth has also donated free massage certificates as door prizes and donates her artistry talents at the annual foster family picnics. Children’s Services is grateful to Ruth for the many, many ways she gives to others.

  11. MARILYN HUNTAMER WILKINSON Parks and Recreation ALEX A. MARTINEZ, Director NANCEE HANSON Volunteer Coordinator Marilyn bridges the gap between her community and the County of San Diego, promoting and supporting parks and recreation. She provides hours of dedicated service to each project, has coordinated the planning and contruction of new facilities, she canvasses her neighborhood and is a knowledgeable and fair spokesperson for her community. She has been involved in the construction of Sweetwater Lane Sports Complex, improvements at Goodland Acres, Teen Center at Spring Valley and the Spring Valley Park.

  13. SHERRI HENSLEE Public Defender STEVEN J. CARROL, Public Defender KELLY DITTMAN Volunteer Coordinator In less than three months and with very little training, Sherri devised a schedule whereby she has been able to re-shelve 50 to 100 files per day. She files newly closed files while checking previously shelved files for correct numerical sequence, adjusting them on the shelves for easy accessibility. Sherri has had a direct and positive impact on our branch office. Thanks to her, our files are well maintained and accessible - a necessary ingredient of our work for the attorneys. We consider it an honor to be able to nominate her for Volunteer of the Year.

BERNIE DE SELM Public Works JOHN SNYDER, Acting Director NIELSINE ARCHIBALD Volunteer Coordinator Bernie De Selm has volunteered more than 544 hours over the past 20 weeks to the Department of Public Works. After retiring from the Department of Public Works with 32 years of service, Bernie volunteered on his own to update the Land Development Map Processing Manual. It was a critical project; Bernie recognized the need and responded to it. The manual will benefit County staff, private companies and individuals preparing maps. We are pleased to salute Bernie De Selm's dedication to the Department of Public Works and to the County of San Diego.

  15. JOHN GEARY Registrar of Voters MIKEL HAAS, Registrar RONDA LEVIN Volunteer Coordinator Mr. Geary is a Government and Economics Teacher at Helix High School. He coordinates 35-50 high school students to assist with election night activities at the ROV tally center. He accompanies the students, supervises them and also helps with various tasks connected with election supplies. The Registrar of Voters heavily relies on election night volunteers at the tally sites. They assist the permanent staff with a number of necessary tasks including inspection of voted ballots, inventory of precincts received, unpacking and storage of returned supplies.

  16. BOB TAYLOR San Diego County Sheriff BILL KOLENDER, Sheriff SGT. JULIE SUTTON Volunteer Coordinator Bob Taylor started the volunteer program 5 years ago in Santee, which assists homicide at crime scenes. He held the first Joint Jurisdiction Volunteer Academy (Sheriff’s and El Cajon P.D.). Mr. Taylor also received the Ageless Angel Award from the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
