  1. Spiritual Maturity TrainingWeekend 2 – Session 4 Core Doctrines and Church Life

  2. The Bible & the homosexual question

  3. Is the Bible Clear on the Question of Homosexuality • 3Important Facts • The Bible never refers to homosexual practice in a positive or even neutral light • Homosexuality is never stressed as a primary issue but it is always denounced • The act of homosexuality is always denounced but the issue of same-sex attraction is never mentioned or denounced as inherently sinful

  4. Old Testament Passages • 22 “‘Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable. Leviticus 18 • 13 “‘If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads. Leviticus 20

  5. Old Testament Passages • 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom —both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.” Genesis 19

  6. Old Testament Passages • 24 There were even male shrine prostitutes in the land; the people engaged in all the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 1 Kings 14 (See also 1 Kings 15:12; 22:46; 2 Kings 23:7)

  7. If you want to take OT Law then you have to take it all – Right?

  8. What about the OT passages 1. There is an important difference between ceremonial and moral law 2. There is an important difference between the theocracy of Israel and the New Covenant Kingdom 3. The Ceremonial Law was fulfilled by Christ 4. The moral law is constantly reaffirmed in the NT

  9. Never Accepted • The Bible is clear that homosexual practice is not accepted before the Law, under the Law, or after the Law

  10. New Testament Passages

  11. New Testament Passages • 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Romans 1

  12. New Testament Passages • 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. • 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Romans 1

  13. New Testament Passages • 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a]10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6

  14. New Testament Passages • 9 We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. 1 Timothy 1:9-11

  15. Modern Objections to a biblical view of homosexuality

  16. Jesus Never Denounced Homosexuality

  17. Objections • Jesus clearly confirms that God-ordained marriage is between a man and a woman • Just because the Bible describes other practices as taking place does not mean it is God’s will • The only rightful sexual activity is within that marriage covenant • We have to be careful to see marriage in the eyes of God—who cares what the state allows or disallows?

  18. Objections • How can a loving relationship be wrong? • The Bible forbids abusive homosexual relationships but the people of that time knew nothing of loving, monogamous relationships

  19. Objections • People are just born that way • No one chooses to have same-sex attraction • Those are two entirely different statements
