This seminar addresses the ethical challenges faced by PhD students when considering if a student should pass a course despite not meeting eligibility criteria. Key dilemmas include the potential for conflict with an angry student, financial implications for the department, and the pressure to prioritize research over administrative duties. Participants will explore different perspectives, including the impact on rightful students, educational standards, and long-term societal effects. Strategies for negotiation and maintaining educational integrity will be discussed, emphasizing collaborative solutions.

Ethical Problem • You are a PhD student (problem owner) and have a student who clearly is not eligible for a “pass” in your course • Should you let the student pass anyway?
If No - ethical problems or conflicts in the context? • Direct conflict with the disappointed/angry student • The department loses money • You will lose more time because of more work on the course (re-correcting exams/reports). Your supervisor thinks you should spend it on research instead!
If YES - ethical problems or conflicts in the context? • Student does not get the education he/she is entitled to • Unfair to students that passed the course rightfully
Which alternative solutions are there? • Hand problem to someone else (course administrator) • Negotiate other solutions with the student
Who will be affected by the decision? Yourself The student The Dpt. /Next course The university The society
What values, interests, duties ... are involved in the solution? • You have standards which you wish to uphold • If yes, your standards are lowered • The university/department gets money for every student who passes their course • If yes, they get more money but students might be less prepared for the next course • You are excepted to educate the students • If yes, the society loses competence (which they have paid for) • You have an obligation to do research • If yes, you get more time for you own research
How to make sure the solution is used? You can talk to all the course teachers to agree on the standard - Where do we draw the line? You can talk to the student and try to figure out a solution together You can talk to the person in charge of the course and make sure they know about the student
