  2. Verbes comme préférer • In French, some verbs have two different stems. We call these stem-changing verbs and we will see some of them in this lesson. • The model verb is préférer and it is conjugated in the following slide. Notice how its stem changes. Because of their distinctive pattern, we call them boot verbs.

  5. Les verbes vouloir, pouvoir, et devoir • These three verbs are often used together and have similar conjugation patterns. Vouloir means to want, pouvoir means to be able to, and devoir means to have to. Let’s look at their conjugations and then we will see how they are used.

  8. Les verbes vouloir, pouvoir, et devoir • Here is an example of how all three are used together. Notice that these verbs are followed directly by an infinitive. • Tu veuxregarder un film ce week-end? • Désolé mais je ne peux pas aller au cinéma. Je doisétudier pour mon examen de français.
