  3. Slow Change • The first settlements of humans began to change from hunting and gathering to more sedentary. • We are looking about the time period around 10,000 BC. • Populations were small and life was hard. • The idea of agriculture did not happen overnight it took 100s if not 1000s of years

  4. What is agriculture? • Take a few moments to come up with a working definition and examples. • What are going to be the challenges? • Think back to 2nd unit Population and Migration-What connections will we make with this unit?

  5. Root crops Tubers of all kinds are an excellent source of carbohydrates. Also, many are source of fiber and potassium. Why would this be important during this time??

  6. Grasses: Wheat and Barley

  7. Seeds • It seems so simple yet man did not realize how seeds developed into plants for food. It mostly likely began to happen on accident. • There is no documented evidence of how this happened because it was before civilization existed. • Most likely humans began to return to the same spots during their migrations and realized how the dropped seeds had grown into productive plants.

  8. Stable food source • Take a moment and write/think about 5 things that changed in terms of culture, lifestyle, and activities after early humans developed a stable food source through agriculture. • What are some things that made some areas more successful than others? • What things could people around 8000-3000 BC do to improve the yields of the fields?

  9. Genetic Change of Crops through time

  10. Where??

  11. Who is the “man” on diffusion? • Who do you think studied the diffusion of agriculture? • What do you think you would need to study this?

  12. Major Agricultural Innovations • According to Carl Sauer there are 11 areas (pg 355 in de Blij)

  13. Animals • Some of the first to be domesticated: • Goats 10, 000 years ago, Zagros Mountains • Sheep 9,500 years ago in Anatolia Why are animals important? What does it mean to be a “Beast of Burden”
