Elements that Weight Heavily on Application • MCAT Score • GPA • Overall • Science (Biology, Math, Chemistry & Physics) • Take major into consideration but first screening step • Personal Statements & Secondary Essays (specific to different schools) • Letters of Recommendations • Extracurricular potion of application

  3. Application Overview • Primary (submit close to June 1st) • Personal Information • Educational History (Courses, GPA) • Activities • Schools applying to • Personal Statement • MCAT Score • Secondary (due date depends on school) • Essays specific to each school

  4. Letters of Recommendation • 2 Science and 1 Non-Science • Additional recommendations • Up to 6 total, but 5 at most schools • Research PI, Physicians • Employers • 2 Options for LOR Services: • AAMC • USC Pre-Health Office

  5. How to Ask • Email First • Remind them of who you are • Why you picked the professor • Which cycle you are applying in • Why you want to be a doctor • Don’t forget to thank them! • Follow-Up Meeting • Treat it like a medical school interview • Dress appropriately

  11. Types of Interview Questions • Why medicine? • Why this school? • Standard interview questions—strengths and weaknesses, hobbies, etc. • Questions about your research experience • Questions about volunteer experiences • Ethical questions

  12. When You’ll Hear Back • Most schools do rolling admissions—get your application in early! • Some schools release all decisions later in the cycle (early/late March) • Choose school by May 15th • Offers off the waitlist can occur throughout the summer
