Ping Pong Diplomacy • Exchange of table tennis players in the 1970s leading to fewer tensions between China and the United States • This paved the way for Nixon’s historic visit to Beijing
stagflation • Economic condition created in the late 60s and 70s by high inflation, stagnant economic growth, and high unemployment • First time since WWII that the economy was faltering
Affirmative action • Policy that gives special consideration to women and minorities to make up for past discrimination in jobs, housing and education • Put in place to ensure accurate representation of all groups
Détente • Flexible policy adopted by Nixon to ease tensions between the U.S., Soviet Union, and People’s Republic of China • Thawing of the Cold War
OPEC Oil Embargo • An embargo (stoppage) place on the U.S. that stopped U.S. ability to purchase foreign oil resulting in a spike in oil prices overnight • Some areas experienced an increase from under $1/gallon to over $3.
Watergate • A political scandal involving Nixon in which he tried to gain campaign information via wiretapping the Democratic party’s phones. • Resulted in the first ever resignation of a President
25th amendment • Sets up the order of succession for filling a vacancy of the Presidency or Vice Presidency • Established that the VP was nominated by the POTUS in case of vacancies
Presidential pardon • Power listed in the Constitution allowing the President to forgive or pardon crimes against the United States • Most notably used by Ford, to pardon Nixon for his crimes and involvement with Watergate
Executive privilege • A privilege claimed by the POTUS that allows him/her to withhold information in public interest. • Some privilege exists, unless the info is “essential to the justice of the case”
Camp David Accords • A secret meeting brokered by Carter resulting in a framework for long lasting peace between Israel and Egypt
Ayatollah Khomeini • Leader of the Iranian Revolution who brought strict Islam back to Iran and established a theocracy • Condemned Western influence and involvement in the Middle East
Iranian Hostage Crisis • A direct result of U.S. support for the Shah of Iran, student revolutionaries occupied the American embassy and took 52 hostages for 444 days. • Led to more intense relations between Iran and the U.S.
