RIPPLL: Regional Interoperability Project on Progression for Lifelong Learning

The RIPPLL project aims to support lifelong learning by joining up systems and building a regional identity through the use of ePortfolios. The project involves the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, City of Nottingham Passport, and local employers. The key outcomes include informing reference model projects, building capacity through sharing resources, and providing recommendations about standards.

  1. RIPPLL Regional Interoperability Project on Progression for Lifelong Learning Dr Angela Smallwood, Project Director angela.smallwood@nottingham.ac.uk Sandra Kingston, Project Manager sandra.kingston@nottingham.ac.uk Centre for International ePortfolio Development, University of Nottingham

  2. The consortium • Both Nottingham HEIs (University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University) • City of Nottingham Passport (LEA): KS3-4 and Nottingham FE Colleges • Local employers, e.g. Rolls-Royce, Toyota, EMDA

  3. Context • Focus on continuity across transition supported by ePortfolio • Build on and extend existing partnerships • Towards a regional identity: joining up systems in the region – modelling LLL • Support WP agenda • Focus on a wider range of learners

  4. Why we got the money • Wide range of learners, including vocational pathways • Inclusion of LEA and employers • Progression in a variety of directions, study-study, study-work, work-study

  5. Managing change • Through involvement of CoNP we have support of all FE colleges in the region • Sharing the HE vision/experience across platforms • Building a regional identity: Nottingham as a national test bed/showcase

  6. Joining up systems • Building on previous experience using UK LeaP (BS 8788) standard • Technical consortium have agreed minimum data set (identity data + personal statement) • Demonstrated lifelong learner journey by passing one individual’s data across 5 transitions: KS4, FE, HE and employment

  7. Shibboleth • Federated authentication system expected to replace Athens • Deployed on Microsoft platform (most support documentation is Unix-based) • Dummy service now running between two servers at NTU • Trialling use for authentication of PDP data

  8. Key outcomes • Informing Reference Model project work: suggests possibilities for wider range of projects to do the same • Community of developers/pedagogic staff across sectors • Building capacity: sharing resources • Recommendations about standards • Sustainability: Passport, NTU PDP

  9. Where next? Bid to JISC for extension funding based on: • Supporting sustainability of systems within the region • Sustaining collaboration and discussion within the technical group • Involving a wider range of partners: Connexions and more local employers, including SMEs • Extension of interoperability pilots to use web services • Dissemination to the wider community: the RIPPLL effect!
