  1. American Society of Addiction Medicine ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) classes are used to encourage individuals to really examine the reasons behind their addictive and abusive behaviors. Substance abuse has been linked to basic psychological issues. Therefore, delving deep into the root cause and even the effects of these behaviors can give a better insight to the underlying problem. ASAM classes are designed around the ASAM criteria for treatment. The ASAM criteria is based on 6 dimensions. Dimension Criterion 1 Acute Intoxication and/or Withdrawal Potential 2 Biomedical Conditions and Complications 3 Emotional, Behavioral, or Cognitive Conditions and Complications 4 Readiness to Change 5 Relapse, Continued Use, or Continued Problem Potential 6 Recovery/living Environment Using the ASAM criteria, individuals can become active participants in their own recovery and well-being. They can learn about and understand treatment options. The criterion views the individual completely. It does not single out one medical or psychological condition. It examines

  2. one’s life areas including all of one’s risks, strengths, and goals. Individuals can work with treatment providers to create a personal treatment plan based on the ASAM criteria assessment.
