  1. Our School Council What makes an effective school council? Middleton Technology School

  2. An Effective School Council Is... "An elected body of pupils whose purpose is to represent their classes and to be a forum for active and constructive pupil input into the daily life of the school community."(School Councils UK) At Middleton Technology School the purpose of the School Council is to involve young people in the life of their school. The School listens to the views of pupils, and this has been seen to have a number of benefits to both staff and pupils.

  3. Why? • Pupil voice • Empowerment • To bring forward the views of our school and local community. • To share ideas amongst pupils. • To discuss the opportunities available for students.

  4. Who? • Representatives from each year group are elected by their tutor group • There are two representatives from each tutor group • We are identified by our badges • We sign and adhere to a School Council contract • Our Head teacher and /or assistant head teachers attends some meetings • The Connexions advisor has attended • ‘Cater Clean’ Manager (school dinners) has attended Our year 7 reps

Our contract School Council Representative Contract • Terms and conditions of contract • To attend every school council meeting, as required. • To be punctual to school council meetings. • To attend extra curricular school council workshops and meetings, as required. • To listen to and act upon the views of others in my school and local community. • To provide clear and up-to- date feedback to my tutor group. • If for events beyond my control I am unable to comply to the above I must see Miss Elleray (H1) as soon as possible. • Remember this is your school council! • I, of agree to the terms and conditions of being a school council representative. If I do not comply with the above I may forfeit the opportunity of being a school council member • Signed_________________________________.

  6. What? • Examples of issues include bike shed, new build, charity events, Ofsted • We listen to and gather the views of our peers and bring them to meetings or post on the School Council website.

  7. What? • Representative responsibilities include: • Attend meetings • report back to form • use website for comments • attend extra workshops such as BSF, Architects, Healthy Schools, Magistrates Court, Borough Wide School Council.

  8. How? • Agendas- they give us a plan of the meeting and tell us what we have to discuss. The agendas help to organise the meetings. • Action points- these tell us important information about what is, what will be or what needs to be done after each meeting. • Website & notice board- tell everyone around the school information that they need to know and about our action points. They allow people to leave comments and feedback.

Example of action points Middleton Technology School Action Points From a meeting of: School Council Date: 30th January 2007 Feedback from the last meeting Miss Elleray thanked those students on behalf of Mrs. Clish and Miss Smith from Connexions for their interest and feedback in the Reward and Careers workshops. Homework questionnaire Reps completed a questionnaire about homework for Miss Kellett. This feedback will be used to inform future homework in school Valentines Ball 8th Feb Mrs. Hulton would like some volunteers to help decorate the hall for the disco. BSF update Reps were informed of school closes, merges and changes in Rochdale.
