  1. SZA - Drew Barrymore Music video analyses

  2. Main focus on artist • In SAZ’s music video, there is a strong focus on her as a female artist, she is dressed in sensual 2000s fashion demonstrating the R&B/pop genre. Her hair atrracts attention as it is styled in a dramatic way, her eyes are also exaggerated with makeup. This might connote artists extravagancy/personality and the way she expresses her self, as well as pay audiences attention to such image

  3. Morning after party • The music video is clearly related to the lyrics ‘why is is so hard to exept the party is over’ as a partyscene evident as well as the morning after SZA is shown eating a birthday cake from the night before. I like how they used birdeye view shot and tracking shots in this music vidoe to create interest for the audience. Overall music video is illustrated in cold/blue colours/shades, with low-key light. I believe it was made in order create a feeling of hangover after late night party, as if establishing further event of the music video

  4. Details • The canted angle was used to illustrate the character’s feeling of being either high or out of her mind, sitting outside after party • The music video uses LED coloured lights to illustrate the main singer which I though was very effective. It also helped to give off a modern atmosphere and helped to make the video eye catching

  5. Mise-en-scene/Shots • In addition, some unusual shots were illustrated to add an interesting image to the artist, again refering to her extravagant style/personality • It is evident from the mise-en-scene that it is a morning after party. People sleeping on the floor, empty bottles of alcohol, messy room, etc. It also helps the audience to establish first image of the music video

  6. Party location • The director of the music video also portrayed some really interesting visuals of handheld shots, to demonstrated the chaos of the party and make the audience feel drunk/high. The music video is also predominatly set in the night time, and overall music video is quite muted with low-key light with a few occasionsl pops of colour. This was made in order to set the correct mood for the audience, as parties are often occur in the night time. House party might relate to the genre of the song – looks urban, underground, not mainstreem (not a huge party with lots of lighting), urban music – r&b, dance music

  7. Friends • In general she sings about personal warmth and warmth that you and people around give to u. Therefore, images with friends might’ve been illustrated to connote people’s relationship • Their costumes might also refer to the song as they are all wearing warm clothes (coats) • To support concrete meaning of the word ‘warmth’, they have added lots of cold locations as snowing hill or New York streets, metro station, etc.

  8. Friends part 2 • Images at the end refering to the lyrics ‘warm enough for ya outside/inside me, me…’, therefore showing the warmth of friends and their relationships. • Throughout all music video, artist’s friends were always there for her; however, at the end they are leaving, by giving her a goodbye hugs. This might signify that friends will support and be there for you in life, but sometimes people can leave, and it might be for good

  9. Lyrics • There are lots of refering to the lyrics in the music video • “I get so lonely I forget what I'm worthWe get so lonely we pretend that it's worse”
