Fall/Winter 2018: Key Menswear Trends Directions

Labelled as the ‘most diverse fashion month’ in the history of fashion, the Fall 2018 showcases took a surprisingly different turn by including a vast mix of separates, casual wear, layering and outerwear. Strong details that focused on structure and form, such as corsetry and utility, delivered messages of women empowerment, giving designers a wider range to practice their creativity. Fringes and sequins might have been overdone – but they were seen making a fun and glamorous comeback, in an attempt to visually break the consistency of an outfit or to add an attention-grabbing element to an otherwise somber silhouette.

  1. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction [[ A Fashion is no stranger to the term ‘History repeats itself’, and through the years, it has been made evident that fashion is cyclical. Designers recycle trends from bygone eras, citing them as inspirations to appeal the presentday audience. Though some trends prove themselves to be classics no matter what year we are in, there are others that we wish would just poof out as the day dawns. A much needed transition from the mass procurement of streetwear and athleisure-inspired styles towards cleaner and more grown-up styles has emerged as a key defining trend for the Fall/Winter 2018 season. A massive chunk of designers are shifting their focus away from a crescendo of casual everyday looks to incorporate a more refined and traditional sense. Functionality and utility are up for the taking too, with performance fabrics and workwear inspired silhouettes appearing across multiple international runways. Logos and typefaces made for a recurring theme – the idea of a collection being relatable to the direct consumer has all sorts of commercial value attached to it. Nostalgia underplays travel-induced insomnia with landscapes and vistas emerging as one of the popular print pattern motivations. www.apparelresources.com

  2. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction [[ A The current target market in question, the millennials, is a generation that believes not in owning, but in doing and experiencing. This has fuelled the questioning and reevaluating of long-held power structures and company ideals within the industry. The new generation wants to speak up about taboo topics, they want to talk about diversity, transsexualism, women empowerment, body positivity, sexual liberation, politics and sexual harassment to interject the lines of creative freedom. They demand a collection that bears semblance to each of these topics, and to have some weight. A rigid dichotomy between form and function is deciding the future of fashion with consumers rising to the occasion and asking for more thought-provoking, innovative and emotive pieces that form a one-on-one connect. From the colour of the season to the print in question to the silhouettes to own, here are the trends that will be shaping the world of fashion in the seasons to come... www.apparelresources.com

  3. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction Born in Brown Desert-y tones set the pace for the approaching winter months with colours such as brown, beige, taupe, chocolate and khaki, emerging as the shades du jour of clothing and accessories. Suede in taupe and beige surfaced at Louis Vuitton whereas a richer and more grown-up brown appeared at Ermenegildo Zegna and Marni. Giorgio Armani followed suit and chose a dark chocolate brown to accent its latest collection.

  5. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction Puffer Parade Rising like the phoenix from the late ‘90s, the puffer/padded jacket has seen a profound resurrection in the past two seasons. The current fashion climate indicates that this trend is not going to die down anytime soon. The puffer jackets of Fall/Winter 2018 though, are puffier in volume, longer in length and have additional details added to them. Stylized details include hints of shearling and outwear hardware such as diagonal zips and drawstring closures.

  9. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction Luxe Leather Leather is the (material) weapon of choice this winter with an umpteen number of designers and high fashion brands making a conscious effort to include it within their collections. This season, there has been a keen shift from shorter bomber styles to more refined, classic and longer lengths that are belted or cinched at the waist. Knee length leather coats that mimic robes are the only design elements independent enough to dictate an entire winter wardrobe this coming season.

  11. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction Jumper Gen Jumpers are an integral part of the winter wardrobe and nothing sparks nostalgia as much as this staple garment. Comfy knits in luxe cashmere are undergoing major experimentation in the name of surface textures and interesting print-pattern concept details such as vibrant colour blocking, ski themed prints and retro patterns.

  13. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction Scorching Red As is the case with menswear collections, deep, dark, and subdued tones maintained their reign, but this time around, another tone showed signs of overtaking the dominant winter palette. A bunch of brands got the striking ‘red’ memo and onward rolled out the bold, warming shade over suits, bombers and overcoats, track suits, parkas, sweaters, boots, bags and almost everything else you would expect from a menswear collection.

  15. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction Oriental Affair Oriental influences creeped in on multiple collections across a range of garments varying from bombers, windcheater jackets, robes, to even Chinese collared shirts. Fabrics, such as silk, satin and other luxe materials ornamented with lush embroidery or exquisite prints, inspired by the Far East highlighted Chinese artistry and techniques.

  17. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction Workwear Heroes Workwear inspired clothing is one of the key themes this season. Comfort-based clothing has seen a monumental rise in utilitarian details, especially amongst the outerwear category. This season offers a contemporary take on classic worker uniforms that translate themselves into slim line track and boiler suits inspired by the uniforms of Air-Sea Rescue teams and DLR operators. Expect to see utilitarian details such as harness belt straps, functional pockets, practical zippers and drawstring closures paired alongside performance fabrics like technical nylon.

  19. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction Larger Than Life Checks Checks are going all out this season – from windowpane checks to tartan to Prince of Wales, to plaid, the boxy print pattern is making itself known in every shade possible on the colour spectrum. What is different this season, you ask? Well, the checks for Fall 2018 are bigger, bolder and making a statement. Worn head to toe as a co-ord or a mash-up, the way it’s being utilized has a lot to say about the spirit of the times.

  21. F/W’18: Key Menswear Trend Direction Reflectoratti High-shine reflective patches emerge as a key style detail for the Fall/Winter 2018 season with designers incorporating neon coloured retroreflective sheeting (similar to those used in traffic directional signage). High visibility reflective patches in neon yellow, moon grey, citrus green and electric blue decked the outerwear category over sleeves, pockets and the area adjoining the knee and the calves.
