Who is PAN Europe • PAN Europe is one of the 5 centers of PAN International • 38 not-for-profit members in 25 European countries • Bring together health, environmental & women associations • Working to replace use of hazardous pesticides with ecologically sound alternatives • Brussels based with 6 part time employees The street of our office => :

  3. 2. Why pesticides? “The more I learned about the use of pesticides, the more appalled I became… What I discovered was that everything which meant most to me as a naturalist was being threatened, and that nothing I could do would be more important.” Rachel Carson, 1962

  4. Why towns? • Started in the 90s • EU Directive 128/2009 on sustainable use of pesticides, saying in art 12 on Reduction of pesticide use or risks in specific areas:  ensure that the use of pesticides is minimised or prohibited in certain specific areas, such as public parks and gardens, sports and recreation grounds, school grounds and children’s playgrounds

  5. What has been done so far? Started with a conference in Brussels in 2015. Now an EU wide campaign with homepage (pesticide free towns) translated in 7 languages, with: • Guidelines for towns with best practices on how to go pesticide free, including part on workers • Map of pesticide free towns + and of pioneers • Films, testimonies, webinars

  6. Why this workshop today? • Deleuze in the 2015 conference showed this photo and called his main gardener the ‘prix de nobel’ du park • When we saw this, we decided time for action
