Not Everything Is on the Internet, Quality Control Does not exist  Only about 8%* of all journals were available on web in 2000; It’s improving: sample of Swetswise (from 15000 titles 8486 are on-line in ftxt)  very few substantive materials are on the Internet for free  Access to some journals is very expensive  Anyone can put on Internet anything

  5. The Needle (Your Search) in the Haystack (the Web) e-resources advantage is searchability but the result is not always satisfactory esp. with Internet which is like a library without catalog.

The Internet Is Ubiquitous but Books Are Portable  The Internet exists everywhere at the same time  Humans have 1,000 years of reading print in the bloodstream  The Web is great, but it’s not substitute for a full- service library.  The Web is a very valuable tool to be used by libraries. Also:  Digitisation of resources, shared access to information where possible.  How to deliver effectively and efficiently

  7. How are the e-resources delivered?  Individual objects via Internet or IT support(e-book,e-journal…)  Searchable databases

First step: Identify the Electronic resources used Factual information/analysis (First, Oxford Analytica, EINnews.com, Landguiden, Stratford…) Bibliographic information (Lancaster index, CIAO,WAO, EDN…) Full texts  Books (E-book, Xrefer, Net-library…)  Journals (Swetswise, Ingenta…)  Documents, publications, treaties (UN, EU, OECD, OSCE)  Any (Lexis Nexis, Proquest…)

Why Research the Literature? Purpose To build on your knowledge of what has already been researched and established on your topic Reference to these articles then demonstrates your ability to find and identify useful material It also demonstrates your ability to critically appraise information.

What are journals and journal articles.  Journals are also known as periodicals and are similar to magazines, being published at regular intervals  They are therefore much more up to date than books and are also more specific in content  They are refereed to ensure their academic quality  References to articles in journals will include a string of numbers after them e.g.  12[2] p345-52 this is volume 12, part 2, pages 345- 352

What are Databases and Electronic Journals collections  Electronic journals collections are a set of full text articles that we have paid for  Databases are resources for identifying useful articles  Nowadays it can be hard to tell the difference between journals collections and databases because you will get some full text articles from databases – this is only when they know that we have a subscription for that title.

Security Access to the electronic journals and databases are protected either by ip. address or the Athens authentification system  IP controlled ones can be accessed from home via the proxy server  Alternatively you can obtain an Athens account and access products either through the library web pages or via My Athens http://www.athens.ac.uk  AOL users will experience problems setting up the proxy server and will not be able to use Science Direct.

Search Engines  SEARCH ENGINE is a program that searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found.  Although search engine is really a general class of programs, the term is often used to specifically describe systems like Alta Vista and Excite that enable users to search for documents on the World Wide Web and USENET newsgroups  A search engine like google can be used to look for other search engines. You can call and use google by typing the google address at the URL www.google.com  http://www.sou.edu/library/searchtools/

  19. GOOGLE AS A SEARCH ENGINE AND PROVIDER OF OTHER USEFUL SERVICES  It is a popular search engine but it has limitations. It cannot pull out records from sources that require registration of some sort for use.  For a single search it can provide millions of records. This challenge can be addressed by using inverted commas at the beginning and end of the search term.

A database may contain citations or it may have full-text articles. Every database has its own subject scope and coverage. It is searchable in a variety of ways, such as title, author, subject, and keyword. But only in its normal database environment, using the database-specific search engine.
