  4. What are the Pieces Made Of? • TX. High School Requirements: High School course guides • GPA (grade point average) begins in 9th grade • What Is a Credit? • One credit = 1 full year in a class • One half credit = 1 semester in a class • To earn credit: • Average must be 70% or higher • Must have 90% attendance

  5. The Big Picture: TX. Recommended Graduation Plan • 2 credits of (the same) Foreign Language • 1 credit of Fine Arts • 1 credit of Physical Education • 1/2 credit of Speech • 5.5 additional electives 4 English 4 Math 4 Science + 4 Social Studies

  6. Graduating on theDistinguished Achievement Program • Recommended Plan 26 Credits PLUS: • Three credits of the same foreign language • IPC and Math Models do not count as one of the four sciences or maths • Four “advanced measures” • Preapproved research project • AP Test Score of 3 or higher • PSAT recognition (National Merit Scholar) • 80% or higher in College Dual Credit course or articulated courses

Parental Piece • BE INVOLVED • Setting expectations for your child and following thru • Meeting Teachers and counselor • Know the requirements • Check grades and homework in Home Access Center (HAC).   8. Planning Piece • Know course requirements • Get a binder and collect data • Prepare and study • Higher GPA can mean better opportunities • Choose a career path • Research careers and best school to attend • Look for scholarships • Set goals and timelines

  9. Get Plugged in Piece • Get in clubs & organizations • Community service clubs can promote: • Communication skills • Decision making skills • Goal Setting • Build Character Development • Healthy Relationships • Being involved can promote better standards, expectations and grades

  10. Plan Early • It begins the 1st day of high school • Stay Informed • Know your requirements • Ask lots of questions • Talk to Teachers/Counselor • Pick classes and a career for YOU!

  11. College Planning • Think about your future • Choose a program of study • Prepare for college tests • Take required College test • Choose a university or trade • Fill out applications and scholarships, grants &loans
