  1. Final Presentation Team leader Wayne Stevens. Group members: Drew Kelly, Stephen Glossner, Jason Gerber

  2. Organization • Morehead State University • More specifically the AET department.

  3. Mission and Vision • The AET department at MSU has a “vision to satisfy the desire and need to understand technology , and to be an educational leader in engineering technology and industrial education. Committed to a life long learning and professional needs of MSU constituents”. • MSU has many accreditations that can be found at http://www.moreheadstate.edu/accreditation/ • ATMAE and SME

  4. Goals of AET department • To prepare problem solvers for professional leadership roles. • To provide and support an environment conducive to research and development and the dissemination of technological knowledge and innovation. • And to dynamically influence economic development within the university’s service region.

  5. TQM at Morehead • Quality in education has become a huge concern for many across America • Quality Management in America deals with three A’s: • Accountability • Alignment • Assessment

  6. TQM at Morehead • We met with Dr. Zargari and got information on classes covering IET, ITCD, and ITCM. • We performed a study and put the information into Pareto Graphs to show size of classes.

  7. IET Department Table 1: IET Fall Class Size

  8. Fall IET Class Pareto Chart Figure 1: Size of IET Classes

  9. Fall IET Classes • The chart shows that IET- 110, 120, 300, 317, 419 classes are larger in size.

  10. ITCD Classes Table 2: ITCD Fall Class Size

  11. Fall ITCD Class Pareto Chart Figure 2: Size of ITCD Classes

  12. Fall ITCD Classes • The three ITCD classes that are offered are not over a total of 25 students in size. • This is good because, the class sizes are not too large so that students may feel left out.

  13. ITCM Classes Table 3: ITCM Fall Class Size

  14. Fall ITCM Class Pareto Chart Figure 3: Size of ITCM Classes

  15. Fall ITCM Classes • The largest class in ITCM is the intro 101 class. • This being a freshman level class, the IET department may want to look into dividing this into two sections. • Freshman students still learning how to get used to college course work, may require more attention.

  16. Why? • The reason we felt it was a good tool of TQM to show the class sizes of these three departments. • There have been many studies that show that students learn better in a smaller class where the teacher can be more focused on less students at a time. • This also shows that the AET department has done a good job of implementing TQM because of smaller numbers in the classes.

  17. TQM at Morehead • We also took a survey from random students to ask what classes they thought should be offered more than once a year, and were extremely important to have at a certain time • The students are going to be remained anonymous

  18. Survey Information • The survey was conducted with 20 people all in different classes. • Each student was asked two questions. Both questions are present in the previous slide. • For the IET section the IET 307 was the class that presented the most response too. All 20 students felt it should be offered more than once in a semester and at two different times for reasons unknown. • Not only for IET 307, but there were other classes that were taken consideration.

  19. Survey Cont. • The ITCD section was torn between ITCD 415 and 315. Both of these classes are similar but are only offered once a year. 16 out of the 20 thought that they should be offered more than once. And 15 out of 20 felt that there should be more than one time for both classes. • The ITCM section showed no problem of a time issue with only 2 out of the 20, and the two just happened to be athletes. There was also no sign of a need for classes needed to be offered more frequently.

  20. Recommendations • The survey that was done with the IET students can also be used as recommendations. • The class sizes that are given in the tables can show how many students are in each course. • Tables and graphs such as these, can be used to keep classes at an appropriate size so that students can get the full learning experience.

  21. Overall TQM at MSU • By looking at the graphs and report of the survey we concluded the following about MSU’s use of Quality management. • They conduct their use of pareto charts very efficiently to see what classes are important enough that needed to be offered. • They also use other measures of TQM to their advantage, since quality in education has become a big issue in the coming days, they do a good job of holding all the faculty and staff accountable.
