Outline • The Global Competitiveness Network, the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2009 and the Enabling Trade Report 2009 • The Travel &Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) and the Enabling Trade Index (ENI) • Focus on Colombia: Colombia’s performance in tourism and trade as assessed by the two indexes and comparisons.

The Global Competitiveness Network • Flagship product: The Global Competitiveness Report: launched in 1979 covering 16 countries; it has since expanded its coverage to 133 countries. • Editor: Professor Klaus Schwab. • Goal: to provide a benchmarking tool for policymakers and business leaders.

Global Competitiveness NetworkOur Reports as a unique tool • Enabling public-private dialogue: The findings of our Reports provide a neutral base for public-private dialogue on how to improve a country’s performance and address shortcomings and weaknesses. • Prioritizing reforms: Identifying strengths and weaknesses in each country’s competitiveness (Travel &Tourism (T&T), trade among others) environment. • Monitoring: Help policy makers, businesses and other relevant stakeholders to monitor progress over time.

  6. Tourism and trade for developmentThe Forum’s T&T and Enabling Trade programs • The openness of nations is an important enabler of competitiveness and development. Particularly in developing countries, travel & tourism (T&T) and trade are important growth drivers. The logistics and travel & tourism sectors should work collaboratively with policy makers and other relevant stakeholders to remove barriers to the movement of people and goods, and encourage productive travel and trade. • The World Economic Forum’s Enabling Trade and T&T programs delve into the fundamental attributes that govern nations’ ability to benefit from trade and T&T. They provide a concrete basis for dialogue between different stakeholders on fostering trade openness and a welcoming and sustainable travel sector.

The Forum’s T&T and Enabling Trade programsThe Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2009 • Aim: The analysis provides an opportunity for the T&T industry to highlight to national policymakers the obstacles to T&T competitiveness for policy attention. • Methodological Tool: The T&T Competitiveness Index (TTCI). • History: Developed and launched in 2007, initiated by the Forum’s Industry Partners in Logistics and Transportation. • Partners: The Forum’s T&T Industry Partners and data partners (UN-WTO, WTTC, IATA, IUCN, Booz Allen, and Deloitte). • Coverage: 133 economies, over 98% of global GDP.

The Forum’s T&T and Enabling Trade programsThe Enabling Trade Report 2009 • Aim: Raise awareness of the significance of international trade flows for economic development and the importance of reducing barriers to global trade, in particular those related to transport. • Methodological Tool: The Enabling Trade Index (ENI). • History: Developed and launched in 2008, initiated by the Forum’s Industry Partners in Logistics and Transportation. • Partners: The Forum’s Industry Partners and International Organizations active in the area of international trade. • Coverage: 121 economies, over 95% of global GDP.

The Forum’s T&T and Enabling Trade programs The Indexes:What data do we use? a) Executive Opinion Survey • It records the perspectives of business leaders around the world; Survey data is indispensable, particularly for variables where no reliable hard data sources exist. • Respondents compare their own operating environments with global standards on a wide range of dimensions. • b) Hard data available from international sources • TTCI:IATA, UNWTO, WTTC, IUCN, Word Bank among others. • EDI:Comtrade, TRAINS, Lega Carta databases, Global Express Association Reports, World Bank, UNCTAD, WTO among others.
