The advanced placement (ap) program • The AP Program offers college-level instruction to the academically successful student while in high school with the option of taking an Advanced Placement examination to possibly qualify for college credit. AP students are expected to work at an accelerated pace and to engage in outside reading and independent learning. The curriculum of AP courses is determined by College Board and focuses on preparing the student to take the Advanced Placement examination for that course. • While AP courses are open to any student who wishes to take on the additional challenge of this advanced curriculum, students who choose to enroll should be prepared for the additional rigor of the course. AP and AP/GT courses concentrate on providing students with rigorous college level instruction while preparing students for the AP exams. • Students are responsible for checking and ensuring that the college they are planning to attend will award credit for AP examination scores.
Class rank Class rank • Class Rank is based on the cumulative grade point average for grades 9-12. • A student’s GPA is derived by dividing the total number of grade points by the number of semester courses attempted. • Rank comes from the registrar’s office. • Freshman will not be ranked until their Sophomore year due to EOC timeline.

Overview • The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) is the new state assessment program that begins in spring 2012. STAAR will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) that has been in place since 2003 and includes 12 end-of-course (EOC) assessments.
Gpa & class rank Does the 15% grading requirement apply to students’ grade-point average (GPA) and/or class rank? • As outlined in statute, the score a student receives on a STAAR EOC assessment is required to count for 15% of the student’s final grade in the course. Calculations of GPA and class rank should be made in accordance with local policies, guidelines, and administrative regulations.
AP Course Do students who are enrolled in an Advanced Placement (AP) course have to take the corresponding STAAR EOC assessments? • Yes, if a student is enrolled in an AP course that is substituting for a TEKS-based course with a STAAR EOC assessment, then the student is required to take the STAAR assessment. • Ex: AP Human Geography = EOC World Geography Exam AP (College Board) Exam • Expectation at GRHS that all AP students take the AP College Board exam.
