Error analysis - abstract on Earthquakes and man What is a scientific abstract? An abstract is a brief condensation of the whole paper. It is a short summary of the report that should follow the title. The summary should include in one paragraph a statement of the purpose of the project, general methods or proceduresused, and principal findings and conclusions. The purpose of an abstract is to give the reader enough information for him to decide whether or not to read the whole report.
So, the question is - The same principle applies to writing an abstract of whatever you have read, heard, or discussed. How are you going to write an abstract of the assigned 4-page reading material? Are you not going to tell us first what is the story about and what is the general content therein, so that we can decide if it is interesting for us to read the whole 4 pages. Sorry, we do not have much time to waste, so to speak.
Wang Zhen Cheng - 1 There are countless earthquakes happened on earth each year, but only few of them(but only a few of them; but few of them)will cause great damage to (the)human. If an earthquake strikes a densely populated area, it will bring a lot of destruction. The key points to determine the damaging potential of an earthquake are the relationships between human behaviors(behavior) and earthquakes, ex. (that is,) time and location. But(However,) the really(real) killer in (an) earthquake is (the) collapsing buildings, but not the earthquake itself. From historical records, we know (there are) many destructive earthquakes indeed happened during human history(redundant) and we can also get the(an) idea why some specific earthquakes bring great damage.
Wang Zhen Cheng - 2 But (However,) to judge the correctness about the historical records is very important; otherwise they will lead to wrong conclusions. Based on historical remains, ancient buildings, or ruins, we know architectural style indeed shows local conditions about earthquakes, (why?) and some heritages (themselves) directly exhibit theprovide evidence for (about) earthquake. Because earthquakes reflect geological processes, they happened only in some structure zones, ex.i.e.,the Dead Sea rift system. Some people attempt to calculate the time intervals of earthquakes from locality (?) and ancient records like Bible, but the results could (probably) be paradox (paradoxical). Due to nature variations (?), there is no obvious(redundant) evidence that the time intervals(frequency) is on the increase or decrease.
Zhu Mei Fei - 1 In each year (Each year), countless earthquakes happened, and (only) a few of them can cause (have caused) disasters in human life and (even) financial terms (of habitation even though they). These earthquakes (don’t) (may not have) originated near the affected places (or), and they are not necessarily the largest. (These earthquakes) They result in damage only by destroying buildings, (not easy to understand) e.g., the 1980 EI Asnam earthquake in Algeria, (and hence) so the principal disaster areas (are mainly) appear to be at the center of habitation, or cities. Therefore, it is not easy to reconstruct earthquake history free of bias in order to forecast by records from cities and unexpected evidence, (quite difficult to understand) for instance, from the Roman bas-relief, the temples at Luxor, the temple column blocks at Athens, a village wall in Iran, and the Dead Sea rift system mentioned (by) in the Bible.
Zhu Mei Fei - 2 Moreover, damage taken by earthquakes(earthquake damage) is largely attributable (attributed) to the method (?) and styles of homes. Less earthquake-resistant(Weak) constructions are found everywhere; they include the adobe in arid regions, the baroque buildings, stonework which collapsed to interfere with running-out people, un-connection between walls and floors, sediments-foundation and so on.(big problem of link here) Earthquake damage is cumulative. (so that a) A series of short earthquakes or aftershocks can cause the same result as a long one, and also make rescue difficult (In fact, the former make the rescue more difficult). Otherwise, in a small and a large earthquake, damage is always greater as places are (respectively) closer to the epicenter and to the point of rupture. The radiation pattern and frequency spectrum of the seismic wave also affect the destruction results: the 1964 Alaska earthquake is an example.
An example of abstract - The story described in these 4 pages is about the relation between earthquakes and man. Many scenes of earthquake destruction have been recorded in various landmarks, such as a Roman bas-relief in Pompeii (Fig. 2), the eroded remains of an Iranian village wall (Fig. 3), the collapsed temples at Luxor (Fig. 4), and the displaced column blocks in Athens (Fig. 5). Moreover, several historical earthquakes have been described in the Bible, particularly, those associated with the Dead Sea rift system (Fig. 6). The Anatolian fault in Turkey is also renowned for earthquake destruction ever since AD100. The article emphasized that the most destructive earthquakes are not necessarily the largest, but they must occur in or near a densely populated region. The historical record provides no clear indication that earthquake activity is on the rise or decline. The events of an earthquake can be pieced together from several lines of evidence, including (1) instrumental recording, (2) damage evaluation, and (3) eyewitness accounts. The second part of the story (p.3-4) gives some descriptions and artists’ reconstructions of the largest historical earthquakes, in the Assam district of India in 1897, and in Alaska in 1964.
Other examples Fu Qingzhou: There are many earthquakes that happen each year but most of them are known only to seimologists from sensitive recording instruments. Zhong Ling: … which means that cities are more earthquake-prone than countrified region. Sometimes, earthquakes have not been recorded because of the buildings are well constructed that they escaped from being destroyed by earthquake. Frankly speaking, the survival of the buildings should not be taken as a signal of lack of earthquakes. Li Xiaofen: There may be variations in numbers and severity of earthquake in locally. Whilst on a global scale, there is no clear indication that earthquakes activity is on the increase or not.
Lin Dexian: The Bible mentions earthquakes that associated with the Dead Sea rift system a number of times. Zhu Qiuhong: In antiquity, people use adobes to build the construction but they have a low resistence to earthquake shaking. Li Mingzhen: In fact, the true factor that made people died is occur time and location of earthquakes. The appearance of earthquake happened is below. Liu Jiamei: In general, earthquake relates to the large-scale tectonic structure. Of the countless earthquakes which are recorded by sensitivity instruments happened each year. Cities are more earthquake-prone than rural region because an earthquake occurred in a densely populated region and sometimes the damage of earthquake is omitted because it is obliterated rapidely by demolition and …..
Chiu Han-I: Sometimes evidence of earthquake damage is obliterated rapidly, because of destruction, the re-use of building materials and natural erosion processes. Su Hongzheng: Though most earthquakes happened in small magnitude were only detected by seismologist, … Lan Defang: When building up a history in order to forcast the likely size, distribution and frequency of earthquake brings about a disaster, so that historical records are interpreted correctly, in order to avoid misleading conclusions…
