  1. Monday, August 29Th • IN Question: • (pg. 4L) or next clean Left Side where you will match up with new notes section • Experiment Review • (Write down the answer choices and number of question) • -Each Question contains part of an experiment. Identify what MAIN CRITERIA is missing. • A control group • Only 1 variable • A sufficient number of tests • Accurate and standard measurements • Relevant and pertinent data • 1) Mike & James tested if light affects rats eating habits. They made 2 large groups and fed one group in a warm, dark area and the other group in a cold lighted area. • 2) Nicole and Jenny wanted to see if turtles ran faster given caffeine. They ran lots of tests and concluded that turtles sleep less if they eat caffeine.

  2. Unit 1: What is biology? Biology 1 Fall 2011

  3. What is biology? • Biology: the scientific study of all forms of life, or all types of organisms

  4. Characteristics of living things • Made of cells • Reproduce • Genetic code DNA • Grow and develop • Use energy • Respond to environment • Stable internal environment (Homeostasis) • Change over time

  5. Cells • All organisms are made up of 1 or more cells. • Cell: basic unit of life, smallest unit of organism considered alive • Living matter enclosed by barrier • Unicellularorganism- made of 1 cell • Multicellularorganism- more than 1 cell • Human body 85 different cells

  6. Reproduction • Production of new offspring • Allows DNA to be passed on • Sexual- two parents • Asexual- one parent

  7. DNA: Genetic code • DNA: genetic code of all organisms, molecule called DeoxyRiboNucleic Acid

  8. Energy • Get energy from metabolism • Metabolism: Chemical reactions that build up and break down materials needed for life • Energy: ability to do work

  9. Response • Detect and respond to stimuli • Stimulus: signal organism responds to

  10. Maintain a stable environment • Homeostasis: maintenance of constant internal conditions in an organism • Needed so cells can best function • EX: temperature, blood sugar, and acidity • Car’s cruise control

  11. Levels of organization Molecules (atoms, compounds) Smallest/ Simplest Largest / Most Complex Cells (Smallest life) Tissues (similar functioning cell groups) Organs(groups of similar functioning tissues) Organ Systems (Groups of similar functioning Organs) Organism (living thing) Population (group of organisms of 1 type in same area)

  12. Levels of organization Community (group of populations) Ecosystem (community and nonliving surrounding) Biome (group of ecosystems) Biosphere (part of earth that contains ecosystem)

  13. Characteristics of Life Concept Map Characteristics of Life
