  2. Working Outdoors • Our company has workers who experience working outdoors in all seasons • Hot weather is generally a concern, but many do not consider working conditions in the cold • Working safely in cold conditions can be done safely

  3. Cold Weather Hazards • Hazards associated with Cold Weather include: • Frostbite – most common • Hypothermia • Illness

  4. Frostbite • Body tissue freezes when it does not get enough heat • Major concern for fingers and toes • Nose, cheeks, and ears are also susceptible • Much more readily a result of touching cold metal objects than from cold air • Body heat is quickly transferred to the object from the body part touching it

  5. Frostbite • Signs and Symptoms • Skin looks waxy • Skin gets numb • Skin may develop a sharp, prickling feeling in area • Area may blister

  6. Frostbite • Treatment • Worker should get to a warm area immediately • Medical attention should be sought • Warm frostbitten area gradually but do not rub • Sterile dressing should be applied to blisters to prevent bursting

  7. Hypothermia • Body can no longer maintain its core temperature • Signs and Symptoms • Shivering • Blue lips and fingers • Poor coordination • Confusion/Poor decision making skills • Disorientation • Slowed heart rate

Hypothermia • Symptoms can be severe • Confusion can cause an inability to recognize the need to get in from the cold • Unconsciousness and extremely slow heart rate can follow severe symptoms • May be associated with an end to the shivering • May be associated with no detectable breathing rate

  9. Illness • Being in the cold tends to encourage illness • Workers should be proactive in protecting themselves against illness • When a worker does become ill, measures should be taken to overcome the illness (i.e. seeing a doctor, taking medication)

  10. PPE • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) • Properly worn, PPE can prevent a worker from the elements in cold weather • PPE can keep body heat in and cover skin which is susceptible to freezing
