    3. The California Poppy was named by the German botanist Alelbert von Chamisso. He named the flower after his friend Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz.

    7. The flower of the California poppy can be 2.5cm to 5cm in width. The flower has four petals which are arranged in a fan shape. They are usually orange in color but can sometimes be yellow.

    8. The California poppy is the California state flower. It was selected as the state flower by the California State Floral Society in December 1890, but the state legislature did not make the selection official until 1903. Its golden blooms were deemed a fitting symbol for the Golden State. April 6 of each year is designated "California Poppy Day."

    9. Is cutting or damaging the California poppy illegal ? It is a common misconception that that the cutting or damaging of the California poppy is illegal because of its statue as a state flower. There is no such law in California. But it is against the law to cut or remove any plant growing on state or county highways or public lands except by authorized government employees and contractors. It is also against the law to remove plants on private property without the permission of the owner.

    10. Chuck Thomas Close Chuck Thomas Close was born on July 5, 1940 in Monroe, Washington. He is an American painter and photographer. He became famous through his massive-scale portraits. In 1988 his spinal artery collapsed which left him severely paralyzed. He continues to paint and produce work.
