  2. DHKPR Community Profile Highlights Highlights in DHKPR (2001 to 2006): • Population growth third highest in the province • Youth population growth • Small but growing Aboriginal and Francophone communities • Immigration is fuelling diversity

  3. DHKPR Growth 3rd Highest in Ontario There were 866,009 people living in DHKPR which accounts for 7.1% of Ontario’s population

  4. DHKPR Growth 3rd Highest in Ontario DHKPR grew by 9% or 71,491 people; 75% of this growth occurred in Durham

  5. Youth Population Growth Ages 13 - 24 DHKPR’s youth population increased by 19,340 individuals to 144,690 or 17% of the total population

Strong Growth in Aboriginal Community • The number of Aboriginal people has increased 45% from 9,730 to 14,065 • DHKPR’s Aboriginal community accounts for less than 2% of the region’s population • Three-quarters of the DHKPR Aboriginal community reside in Durham or Peterborough • 62% of Aboriginal people in DHKPR are First Nations and 32% are Métis

  8. Growing Francophone Community • DHKPR’s Francophone population increased by 1,485, to a total of 15,520, representing an 11% increase • Francophones account for 2% of the region’s population • Three-quarters of the region’s Francophones live in Durham

Immigration is Fuelling Diversity • 11,450 newcomers settled in DHKPR between 2001-06. 86% of these settled in Durham • More than half of recent immigrants come from Asia and the Middle East • In total, 16.6% of people in DHKPR are immigrants • As of 2006, the Black community was the largest visible minority group, followed by the South Asian community

Community Profile Highlights • Durham: • 80% of immigrants in DHKPR live in Durham • About 14% of people in Durham reported a mother tongue other than English or French, which is much higher than any other DHKPR area • Durham is home to three-quarters of the region’s Francophone community • One in six Durham residents identify themselves as a visible minority and account for 95% of the region’s visible minority population • 45% of DHKPR’s Aboriginal population live in Durham

  12. Community Profile Highlights • Also of Interest: • Brock and Trent Hills were the only areas with population decreases • Haliburton has the highest median age in Ontario (50 years) • As of 2006, employment in DHKPR was growing at a faster rate than Ontario as a whole
