  2. What is HIM? Health Information Management • Whenever healthcare is provided, medical records must be created, reviewed and stored. • These records can include any or all of the following: 1. Lab results- blood tests, urine tests etc. 2. X- Rays and other radiology procedures 3. Physicians notes 4. Clinical information (nursing notes, physical therapy notes, and many others) 5. A History and Physical Exam 6. Operative and Procedure Reports 7. And much more

  3. All medical providers must keep records of care provided • Hospitals • Physician Offices • Rehabilitation Centers • Nursing Care Centers • Radiology Centers • And all other health care facilities

  4. EHR (Electronic Health Records) • Many hospitals have advanced technology, including electronic health records • The benefits of an EHR are improved: • Quality of patient care • Availability of patient information • Continuity of care • Control of access to confidential patient information • In many cases, use of an EHR allows HIM employees the ability to work from home.

  5. Who do HIM Professionals serve? Patients Physicians Nurses and other clinicians HIM Government Researchers Healthcare Administrators, Billing and Finance

Interested in HIM as a career? • Here are the levels of education available for a career in HIM: Coding/Billing Certificate With a certificate in coding you can earn the following credentials: CCA (Certified Coding Associate), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) , or CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist for Physician Offices) through the American Health Information Management Association.

  7. Interested in a Degree in HIM? • A two year AS degree can help you earn a RHIT (Registered Health Information Technologist) credential. • A four-year BS degree can help you earn a RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) credential.
