  1. Nectar in a Sieve Exam Review October 3, 2013

  2. Instructions • Without talking, get out a sheet of paper • Title it “Test Review” • For each slide, write as much information as you can in the time given. • When I change the slide, don’t complain, just begin answering the new question. • You do not need to write any information from the slides except the question number.

  3. Identify This Character 1. Rukmani • Who is she? • What is she like? • What do we know about her? • What is her life like at the end of the novel?

  4. Identify This Character 2. Nathan • Who is he? • What is he like? • What happens to him at the end of the novel?

  5. Identify This Character • 3. Kenny • Who is he? • What is he like? • How do people treat him? • What do people say about him?

  6. Write a 1 Sentence Description for Each Character 4. Irawaddy 5. Arjun 6. Thambi 7. Murugan 8. Raja 9. Selvam 10. Sacrabani 11. Puli

  7. Recall, Retell, and Explain 12. Why does Irawaddy become a prostitute? Does this seem like something she would have done under normal circumstances? • Remember, Rukmani was very upset to learn her first child was a girl. What does this tell us about the role of women in this society?

  8. Make a Comparison 13. We’ve talked a lot about what was different in India, now name one thing that is the same in 20th Century India as it is in modern day America.

  9. Think about it… 14. What might the tannery represent in Nectar in a Sieve?

  10. Man Vs. Nature 15. As a farmer, Nathan often depends on nature’s cooperation to provide for his family. Write about one time that the Man Vs. Nature conflict in seen in the novel.

  11. Use your brain 16. What is one possible theme of Nectar in a Sieve? Remember, a theme is the main idea or message. What is it that Kamala Markandaya wanted us to learn from the story? Don’t forget, a theme is a statement, not just one word. “Love” is not a theme. Neither is “Friendship” “Don’t trust pretty girls” isn’t a very good theme either.
