  2. Bisphenol A • What is Bisphenol A? • A product found in some plastics (Brede, 2003). • If a product contains Bisphenol A it will have a number “7” on it (Hatti, 2008). Recycling and Landfills • The waste that is taken to landfills has steadily • increased over the years. • From 1990 to 2000, our landfills received an • increase of 81 million tons of trash per year. • This equals to about 221 million tons of trash in the • year 2000. • Since 2000 we have see a decrease in landfill trash and an increase in recycling. • Landfills in Northwest Indiana (2003).   14. Landfills • There are two major landfills in Northwest Indiana. • We have 13 different types of soil in Indiana. They are all very wet and porous. Soil good for farming, not for landfills. • Do landfills leak? For every 10 acre landfill, about 0.2-10 gallons of potentially toxic liquid will leak out per day. • When Bisphenol A is heated, like in a landfill when it gets hot, it leaches out about 55 times faster. Important facts about recycling plastic • California is not recycling their plastic bottles. • It is estimated that there are over 1 billion bottles not being recycled on a yearly basis. • This adds up to a lot of bottles going into the trash. • Many products can be made from recycled plastic, including clothing and home interior products • State of California, Department of Conservation (2003).   18. Battle Ground’s Recycling Program Battle Ground has been recycling for some time. I propose we go one step further. NO PLASTIC BOTTLES! How can we make this happen? Drink from fountains or paper cups, or better yet, reusable glasses or cups.

  19. Math Lesson • 3 cans or bags of trash each week for a family of four. 52 weeks a year. 14 years old • How many bags of trash has your family put into a landfill since you were born? • 3 x 52 x 14 = 2,184 bags/cans of trash since you were born! Mr. Clerget’s Math Class (2009)

How can I become more involved? • School: Start a program where everyone uses • Paper cups, drinks from the fountain or has a reusable glass or cup from home. • Home: If you don’t recycle, START TODAY! • Community: If you need to recycle something and the place you are at does not have recycling, ask them if you can help them start a program.

  21. “Save the Air, Save the Water, and Save the Earth Day” • Buy a travel cup with a lid. (Save your money, do the laundry, cut the grass for it) • Be ready to bring it, and your ideas, to school for a “Save the Air, Save the Water, and Save the Earth Day”. • Decorating and labeling of your travel mugs/cups will take place. Bring earth friendly pictures. • These will be kept at school and will be used during lunch time and during after school programs.
