  2. LF: 120 kHz to 135 kHz for inductive systems - HF: 13.56 MHz for smart cards and labels - UHF: 433 MHz for low power, active tags - UHF: 863 to 870 MHz, 902 to 928 MHz and 950 to 956 MHz depending on country - µWave: 2.45 GHz for Industrial applications Frequencies for RFID

  3. Current three Generic ETSI Standards: - EN 300 330: 9 kHz - 30 MHz- EN 300 220: 25 MHz to 1 GHz- EN 300 440: 1 GHz – 40 GHz Regulatory Standards

  4. RFID at UHF currently restricted toband 869.40 - 869.65 MHz Must comply with EN 300 220 Transmitted power < 500 mW e.r.p. Duty cycle < 10% Impossible restrictions for RFID at UHF Current Limitations at UHF in Europe

  5. EN 300 220 does not meet needs of RFID at UHF Formation of TG 34 within ETSI to address the specific requirements of RFID industry Design of new ETSI standard EN 302 208 to satisfy market for RFID at UHF ETSI RFID Standard at UHF

  6. Draft ETSI standard EN 302 208 proposes the following: Shared operation in band 865.0 – 868.0 MHz at transmit powers up to 2 W e.r.p. Mandatory “listen before talk” function Operation in sub-bands of 200 kHz Power levels of 100 mW, 500 mW and 2 W e.r.p. Principle requirements

  8. Mandatory listen time of >5 msec before each transmission Maximum period of continuous transmission of 4 sec Pause of 100 msec between repeated transmissions on same sub-band, or move immediately to another vacant sub-band RFID Transmission Times

  9. The technical requirements of ETSI Standard EN 302 208 are based on inputs provided by RFID manufacturers throughout the entire standardisation process. The standard will permit operation in Europe of product built in compliance with ISO 18000-6 The standard may not permit operation of some new systems that are currently under development Scope of EN 302 208

  10. RFID classified as SRD meaning: Type approval only Operate within a shared band No protection Regulated by new Annex 11 of ECC/ CEPT ERC/Rec 70-03 Regulatory Issues

  12. Predicted Milestones: Draft Regulation as Annex 11 to ERC/Rec 70-03, first March 2004 Approved for Consultation April 2004 Expect final approval and publication September/October 2004 Status of ECC/CEPT Regulation
