  1. X-ray binaries and CXB Marat Gilfanov, Igor Prokopenko & Rashid Sunyaev. MPA (Garching), IKI (Moscow)

  2. X-ray binaries HMXB - star formation LMXB - stellar mass Extragalactic surveys, 6-8/11/2006

  7. LMXB • binary evolution: ~1 Gyrs • LMXB luminosity function:main contribution: • brigth NS LMXBs (Z-sources) • BH transients - …? LMXB XLF Extragalactic surveys, 6-8/11/2006

  8. Contribution to CXB <zHMXB> ~ 1.5 <zLMXB> ~ 0.5 2-10 keV: HMXB ~7-10% LMXB <1-2% Extragalactic surveys, 6-8/11/2006

  9. HMXBs & unresolved part of CXB HMXB contribution can explain ~50% of the unresolved part of the CXB (via contribution of faint normal galaxies) Extragalactic surveys, 6-8/11/2006

  10. Conclusions • robust estimate of HMXB contribution to CXB:~7-10% in the 1-10 keV band • significant contribution to unresolved CXB but insufficient to explain all of it • LMXB contribution < 1-2% Extragalactic surveys, 6-8/11/2006
