  1. Introductory Paragraphs August 20, 2014

  2. What is an Introductory Paragraph? • An introductory paragraph is the first paragraph of an essay that attracts the reader's attention and identifies the topic and purpose of the essay.

  3. What are the parts of an introductory paragraph? • Hook • Background Information • Main Idea (Reason for Writing Essay)

  4. Hooks • Hooks serve as the “first impression” of your essay to the reader. • Hooks are meant to capture the reader’s attention and make him/her interested in reading your essay.

  5. Types of Hooks • Question • Anecdote • Quote • Factual Statement

  6. The Question Hook • Are you worried about global warming?

  7. The Anecdote Hook • If I could redo one choice in my life, I would choose not to ride my cousin’s motorcycle. Growing up, I wanted to be just like my cousin Chip, even when he got a dirt bike. When I was seven years old, I asked Chip if I could ride his new motorcycle. My hand revving the throttle, I took off, slid on the pavement, and became trapped under my aunt’s car.

  8. The Quotation Hook • Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

  9. The Factual Statement Hook • The rate of crashes for 16-year-old drivers is almost 10 times the rate for older drivers.

  10. Stay Away From These Hooks • Rhetorical Questions • Dictionary Definitions • “In this essay I will tell you about…”

  11. Intro Paragraph Example • Whether it’s travelling or celebrating or meeting new people, I have experienced many big moments in my life. A big moment is that event that happens that you never forget for as long as you live. Big moments can be good or bad, and I have experienced both throughout my life. All of these events have become important memories to me, and they have made me who I am today. I am excited to share my big moments with you.
