Honorary Lion Professor Arthur LimFounder Chairman, LSSC • Numerous international reportshave emphasized that millions of Asians in the developing countries will be stricken with poverty and starvation, often without education, without shelter, without health and without vision. • The Lions Clubs Internationalcombined with the Lions Clubs of Singapore have taken an important decision to move forward to help by restoring good vision to those blind from cataract or corneal opacities and prevent blindness for the victims of diabetes and glaucoma. • A group of dedicated Singaporeanshas initiated the Lions SaveSight Centre (Singapore) and we hope to attract thousands of supporters to work with us. We pray that the Lions and our more fortunate Singaporeans will join us to help serve the poor. • Let us always remember“Our skills and money are of value only if used to benefit the less fortunate.”

HOW LSSC WAS STARTED?From a 2 years gestation period since the informal first lunch meeting on Friday 25 August 2006, hosted by Honorary Lion Prof Arthur Lim in his office,Lions SaveSight Centre (Singapore) was registered with the Registrar of Societies, Singapore with ROS Reference Number 2071/2008 dated 1st July 2008 and authorized to use the name ‘LIONS’ & Lions emblem from Lions Clubs International on 3rd July 2008.Lions SaveSight Centre (Singapore) had the Inaugural General Meeting on Tuesday 22 July 2008 and the First Management Board was also elected to take Office immediately till December 2009. • Lions SaveSight Centre (Singapore) • 狮子护眼中心

4. LSSC OBJECTS & PURPOSES The Lions SaveSight Centre (Singapore) endeavors to • Establish a centre for the prevention of blindness with strong emphasis on diabetes retinopathy, a blinding complication of diabetes • Develop prevention of blindness program for other important causes of blindness such as cataract, corneal diseases and glaucoma • Create care services, education and training, screening and counseling and research to complement current developments in the prevention of blindness • Coordinate outreach prevention of blindness programs to extend to neighboring countries, in Asia and beyond • Establish eye banking and corneal transplantation with links to Lions Clubs International and its networks and links on sight conservation and eye banks

5. LSSC OBJECTS & PURPOSES • The increasing aging population will continue to drive healthcare cost upwards making it potentially prohibitive for patients to access routine follow-up monitoring of common chronic eye diseases. • Lions SaveSight Centre (Singapore) is set up to provide patients requiring long-term routine follow up on common chronic eye diseases monitoring with affordable and cost-effective ophthalmic care to minimize wait time and costs to these patients.

6. On the LSSC Logo • In 1925, the legendary Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become “Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness”. Since then, the Lions around the world, took the challenge and today Lions Clubs International is best known for our fight to eliminate preventable and reversible blindness amongst the many humanitarian activities and programs. • The LSSC Logo is created by incorporating the Lions Clubs International emblem at the center of the eye symbolizes our loyalty to our cause; focusing our challenge to save sight and our firm commitment to eliminate preventable and reversible blindness in the local scene, later in the regional countries and eventually in the global arena.

7. This original LSSC Mascot is designed by NUS YLL medical student, Ms Cheryl Tan.The rationale of adopting the LSSC Mascot is to allow the general public to relate the centre with the Lions movement. In the near future, you would see this mascot as souvenirs, soft toys and other publicity materials.
