  1. Welcome! National Junior Honor Society Informational Meeting

What is National Junior Honor Society? • The National Association of Secondary School Principals established the National Junior Honor Society in 1929, eight years after the same organization founded the National Honor Society. • National Junior Honor Society is a national organization with chapters in all 50 states with over one million members. • National Junior Honor Society is a means of promoting scholarship, leadership, service, and character , and citizenship within the school and the community.

  3. What are the requirements to be part of National Junior Honor Society? • Two quarters of 3.0 overall average • No grades lower than a “C” in any subject • No discipline points • No “N” or “U” in Citizenship • National Junior Honor Society members are expected to maintain the above standards.

What are the benefits of being part of National Junior Honor Society? • NJHS members are recognized by their parents, school faculty and peers for their academic achievements, leadership, community service, character, and citizenship. • NJHS members are part of a nationally recognized group. • NJHS members are singled out to be inducted into the National Honor Society once in high school (as long as he/she continues to meet the requirements for membership).

What are the benefits of being part of National Junior Honor Society? • NJHS members can be part of activities that provide students the opportunity to cultivate the traits of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship within themselves, their schools, and their communities. • NJHS members have exclusive access to college scholarship programs. In just over 50 years, the NHS Scholarship Program has awarded more than $10 million in scholarships to student members.. Students may be awarded scholarships from $500 to $1,500, and one national winner receives a scholarship for $13,000. • NJHS members are specially recognized at the 8th grade Awards Ceremony.

  6. What do National Junior Honor Society Members do? • In addition to maintaining a 3.0 GPA, exemplary citizenship, and serving as role models to other students, NJHS members will need to complete ten hours of community service per quarter. • Community Service projects can be done individually or in small groups. • Community Service projects will need to be approved by a NJHS faculty advisor prior to beginning the service.

  7. What is the point of doing community service? • Through community service members develop compassion, positivity, and courteousness for the people they help. • Community service provides members exposure to challenging situations that will help them develop their leadership skills and character. • Community service opportunities allow members to explore potential career paths, and spark excitement in new areas of interest.

  8. What’s the next step to join? • There is an application to complete should you and your child choose to join NJHS. • Complete application due by Wednesday, March 14th.
