  2. Birth • Ludwig van Beethovenwas born on December, 16 1770 in Bonn. • He was named after his grandfather. • Ludwig was interested in music at an early age. • His father would teach him night and day after returning to the house from music practice or the tavern.

  3. First Performance • Beethoven’s first performance was at the age of seven, on March 26, 1778 • He learned the organ and composition by renowned musicians such as GottlobNeefe. • Neefe saw how talented he was and started to teach him

  4. First Work • In 1784, he published his first work: 9 variations, in C Minor, for piano, on march by Ernst Christoph Dressler. • Later Neefe wrote in a Magazine of Music, “If he continues like this he will be, without doubt, the new Mozart.

  5. In 1784, at the age of 14, Ludwig was appointed organist of the court of Maximilian Fraz, Elecotr of Cologne. • In 1787, he was given a grand to travel to Vienna to meet Mozart and to further his education. • He had to cut his trip short because his mother passed away on July 17, 1787.

  6. 5 years later Beethoven received another grant to send him back to Vienna, once again to purse musical education. • He never returned to Bonn again. • Once he went back to Vienna he took lessons from Haydn.

  7. 1794, Beethoven composed opus 1, three trios for piano. • In 1800, he organized a new convert in Vienna including the presentation of his first symphony. At this time, it’s said that some listeners found the symphony strange, overly extravagant, and even risque.

  8. In 1801, Beethoven told his friends he was worried about becoming deaf. A year later he wrote his famous text which expressed his anger at the unfairness of his life, called Heiligenstadt Testament. • Beethoven knew it was getting worse, but music kept him living. He threw himself into his greatest works like: sonatas for piano, and the second and third symphonies.

  9. In 1805, the opening performance for his only opera called Leonore, was November 20. • The following year he composed many symphonies such as: the Corioln Overture, the Patoral, and Fur Elise.

  10. Beethoven received an annual grant of 4,000 florins, allowing him to live without financial constraint. • The only condition was that he had to stay in Vienna. Beethoven accepted this grant. • This made him the first independent composer.

  11. November 15, 1815, Beethoven’s brother, Kaspar Karl, died. • Leaving his son under Beethoven’s care.

  12. He passed away March 26, 1827.
