IcebreakerCandy Categories Game Directions: For each candy that you choose, answer something in the categorythat the candy corresponds to and explain how itrelates to Heterosexism Jolly Rancher: Favorite Movie, Favorite Magazine, Favorite Song, or Favorite Book Reses Cup: Favorite Vacation Spot, Place You Would Most Like to Visit, Place You Would Least Like to Visit, or Worst Vacation Laffy Taffy: Something About Where You Live, Something About Where You Grew Up, Something About Your Family, or Something About Your Town/City Starburst:Number of Years in Current Position, Subject You Teach (or will be), or Description of First Job Life Savers: Wildcard (anything you chose)

  8. Let’s get one thing “straight…” • 1952 – the term Homosexual was officially incorporated into the American Psychological Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders • Homosexual = Mentally Ill • Removed from the DSM in 1973 • Removed from the ICD-10 in 1990

  9. What in the GLBTQ2IA ?!?! • Gay • Lesbian • Bisexual • Transgender • Queer • Questioning • Intersex • Allies/Asexual

Homophobia • Homophobic Symbol Used in Nazi Germany • Personal • Personal belief that LGBT people are inferior in any way shape or form. • Interpersonal • Transformative of personal homophobia into an action. (i.e. “that’s gay!”) • Institutional • Government, Business, Educational, Religious, or Professional Organizations discriminate based on heterosexual norms. • Cultural • Socialization of discriminatory behavior towards non-heteronormativity. (Tinney’s 7 categories)

Heterosexual Privilege • Why is this even an issue? • “it is due also to the sexualization of heterosexuality as normative and to the gender-norm presumptions about heterosexuality - that it is the normal way sexually to express one’s gender” (p.395) • Carbado highlights the 3 D’s of heterosexual signification: Disassociation, Disidentificaiton, & Differentiation

  12. Heterosexual Privilege In groups of two or three, look at the list of Heterosexual Privileges (p. 396-398). Choose one that you’d like to investigate further. Then we will discuss as a group.

  13. For the Future Educators Ten Suggestions for Reducing Homophobia in Your EnvironmentBy: Youth Pride Inc. Make no assumption about sexuality.  Have something gay-related visible in your office. Support, normalize and validate students' feelings about their sexuality. Do not advise youth to come out to parents, family and friends as they need to come out at their own safe pace. Guarantee confidentiality with students. Challenge homophobia. Combat heterosexism in your classroom. Learn about and refer to community organizations. Encourage school administrators to adopt and enforce anti-discrimination policies for their schools or school systems which include sexual orientation. The language should be included in all written materials next to race, sex, religion, etc. Provide role models.
