Montenegro's population traces its roots to Albanian origins, significantly influenced by Slavic invasions. Historically, it was part of the Roman province of Illyria and later ruled by the Ottoman Empire starting in 1389. The 18th century saw alliances shaped with Russia, impacting the region's dynamics through World War I. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991, Montenegrins and Serbians formed a Federal Republic. Today, Montenegro is multi-religious, with Orthodox Christianity prevailing, and is transitioning towards a service-based economy, navigated by its mountainous geography and vital waterways.
