  1. The Power Louis G. Hulsey January 13, 1010 Casa Grande, Arizona

  2. The Meeting • Matthew and Mark say that Jesus and an angel told His disciples to meet Him in Galilee after His resurrection. • Matthew 26:32, “But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.” • Matthew 28:5-7, “And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6, He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7, And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.”

  3. The Meeting • Mark 14:28, “But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.” • Mark 16:5-7, “And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. 6, And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. 7, But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.”

  4. The Meeting • But Luke said that Jesus told His disciples to meet Him in Jerusalem. • Luke 24:49-53, “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. 50, And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51, And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. 52, And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53, And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.”

  5. The Meeting • Acts 1:3 indicates that Jesus probably met His disciples several times both in Galilee and in Judea. • Acts 1:1-3, “The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3, To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:”

  6. The Meeting • Jesus told His disciples to wait for the promise. • Acts 1:4-5, “And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5, For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.”

  7. The Question • Acts 1:6, “When theyG3588(G3303) thereforeG3767 were come together,G4905 they askedG1905 of him,G846 saying,G3004 Lord,G2962 wilt thou(G1487) atG1722 thisG5129 timeG5550 restore againG600 theG3588 kingdomG932 to Israel?”G2474 • No doubt the disciples had agreed upon this question together. • “Wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?”

  8. The Question • Would He restore the Kingdom to the present rulers of Israel, to the chief priest and elders who had put Him to death? • Or would He restore it to those in Israel who submitted to His authority? • Both questions are in error.

  9. The Question • The key word is “restore.” The disciples assumed that Jesus’ Kingdom would be temporal, and that He would restore Israel to the former glory it had under David and Solomon. • The disciples thought in terms of a temporal kingdom within the limited territory of Israel. • The disciples wondered who would have authority in the kingdom.

  10. The New Kingdom • But Jesus came to order and establish an eternal and spiritual Kingdom that would encompass the entire world, not to restore the temporal kingdom of Israel.

  11. Don’t Worry • Acts 1:7, “AndG1161 he saidG2036 untoG4314 them,G846 It isG2076 notG3756 for youG5216 to knowG1097 the timesG5550 orG2228 the seasons,G2540 whichG3739 theG3588 FatherG3962 hath putG5087 inG1722 his ownG2398 power.”G1849 • Jesus was not saying that Christians were not supposed to discern the times. • Jesus had given them the signs to anticipate (Matt. 16:3; 24:33). • It was important to discern the times.

  12. A Kingdom Not of Earth • But Jesus had a more important focus for His apostles than current events. • So He told them not to be so concerned about the earthly kingdom or its affairs.

  13. The Instructions • Acts 1:7, “AndG1161 he saidG2036 untoG4314 them,G846 It isG2076 notG3756 for youG5216 to knowG1097 the timesG5550 orG2228 the seasons,G2540 whichG3739 theG3588 FatherG3962 hath putG5087 inG1722 his ownG2398 power.”G1849 • G5550, χρόνος, chronos, khron'-os(From Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance)A space of time (in genitive case, and thus properly distinguished from G2540, which designates a fixed or special occasion.

  14. The Instructions • G2540, Καιρός, kairos, kahee-ros’Of uncertain affinity; an occasion, that is, set or proper time: - X always, opportunity, (convenient, due) season, (due, short, while) time, a while. Compare G5550. • G165, αἰών, aiōn, ahee-ohn’Properly an age; by extension perpetuity (also past); by implication the world; specifically (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future): - age, course, eternal, (for) ever (-more), [n-]ever, (beginning of the, while the) world (began, without end). Compare G5550.

  15. The Instructions • G1849, ἐξουσία, exousia, ex-oo-see'-ahFrom G1832 (in the sense of ability); privilege, that is, (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery (concretely magistrate, superhuman, potentate, tokenofcontrol), delegated influence: - authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.

  16. The Promise • Acts 1:8, “But ye shall receive power [δυναμιν], after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” • G1411, δύναμις, dunamis, doo'-nam-isFrom G1410; force (literally or figuratively); specifically miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself): - ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work.

  17. The Power • The Lord gave the apostles power to do what they had not done before. He had said to them, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19. • The Lord gave power to Shamgar. • The Lord gave power to Gideon who dared to obey God. • The Lord gave great power to Samson. • Esther defeated her enemies without a sword.

  18. The Power • You don’t earn the power. It is a gift. We are given the gift of reigning with Christ. • The power comes by identifying with Christ. • It is power to conquer sin. • It is power to speak God’s will into existence. • It is power to declare His works.

  19. Have the Faith of God • Mark 11:22-24, “And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23, For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24, Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

  20. Demonstrating the Power • Paul came demonstrating the power that came from the Holy Spirit’s baptism. • 1 Corinthians 2:1-5, “And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2, For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3, And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4, And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5, That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”
