  6. Senior Year Checklist • 6 credits • 1 English credit (4 English credits to graduate) • .5 PFL (Personal Financial Literacy) or have tested out • Credits to make up for failed classes • Necessary classes for admission to post- secondary programs

  7. Yes! You are required to be in school all day senior year! Wisconsin Statute 118.33 (1)(b) states, “. . . A school board may not grant a high school diploma to any student unless, during the high school grades, the pupil has been enrolled in a class or has participated in an activity approved by the school board during each class period of each school day.” This means high school students must attend school all day, or a school board approved activity, during their 4 years of high school (grades 9-12), to be eligible for a high school diploma.

  8. Alternative Class Choices/Prerequisites • If there are not enough students enrolled, classes may not be offered. • Be sure to pick alternative classes, numbering them “1” for your first choice, “2” for your 2nd, etc. • Check for prerequisites. You need to have passed the prerequisite course with a “D” or better

  9. How many credits do I sign up for? • 6 credits with a study hall each semester • 6.5 credits with 1 study hall either semester • 7 credits with no study halls * GBPS states that “a student must carry at least 6 credits a year”.

  10. Retaking a Course • If you earned a “D” or “F” in a class, courses can be retaken. • New grade will replace the lower one. • NOTE: You cannot earn credit for the same course twice (exception in math).

  13. NCAA Requirements • If you want to play on a D1 or D2 college athletic team, visit the NCAA website for approved courses. They are also listed in the course selection book . (ncaaclearinghouse.org) If you want to play, you must be responsible!

To find technical, 2-year and 4-year college admission requirements you can find information . . . • In the PHS Career Center or on the Career Center Website • On the Career Cruising website • By calling the technical, 2-year and 4-year colleges directly • By visiting college websites • By making college visits; or meeting with college reps. when they visit PHS ACT EARLY!!!

  15. Zero Hour (6:30 am) Classes • Chemistry • PFL (1st semester only) Be sure to mark the correct box for “zero hour” on your sheet.

  16. Concurrent Enrollment Program Courses (CEP) Can take college-level courses and earn graded college/university credits while in high school. Grades go on an official college transcript. Deadline for paperwork. Can change mind about taking it for college credit 10 days into the class. Need to complete: • Application with personal statement of interest • Two recommendation forms *An English and one other teacher • Tuition is charged for St. Norbert’s and UWGB classes. • NWTC CEP courses do not require tuition.

Advanced Placement Courses • 14 AP course options in school district • Optional AP Exams offered in May – $86 each • Class helps prepare for the exam – but can take exam without the class • 5 is highest score; 1 is lowest – If you earn a 3, 4, or 5 on most exams, 90% of colleges accept this for credit • Results sent to students and high school near end of July • The best AP candidates are very motivated students who tend to earn mostly A’s and B’s in classes. Homework expectations are generally high for these courses.

  19. AP class reminder • Students are encouraged to take AP classes but need to remember to calculate how much time is needed for homework. 1 AP class = 1-2 hours of homework per night. Know your limits! Don’t over schedule your time!

  20. For Juniors and Seniors Take classes at tech and/or 4-year colleges -Apply in Oct. & Feb.for the following semester. -Need to apply each semester. -Need to use lunch or study hall for travel Youth Options

  21. Certified Skilled CO-OP • Required: • 2.5 GPA, in good standing. • Have taken one class in coop subject area. • Permission from Coop advisor. • Attendance is important. • Please schedule 6 credits until paperwork has been completed and approved for Coop. • Elective credit and hourly wage.

  25. Students may sign up for classes offered at other schools. Transportation is your responsibility. Must complete a shared student form. Travel during a study hall and lunch. No guarantees to create the “perfect” schedule. Traveling to Other High Schools

English Language Arts • Juniors – You will most likely need 1.0 credit of English Language Arts for senior year. • Competitive universities like UW-Madison generally like to see more than 4 credits of Language Arts. • REMEMBER – For A.P. courses, you should be earning an A or B+ grade in Language Arts *teacher recommendation *parent signature

MATH – 3 credits to graduate • See current math teacher and get initials for recommendation • Taking Algebra I in Grade 8 counts for 1 elective credit, not math credit. • Gr. 8 Geometry DOES count for HS math credit. • Most colleges want to see 4 years math • It will be beneficial to have as much math in high school to prepare for college.

  30. NOTE: WHEN MAKING MATH SELECTIONS… • For many colleges, AP Statistics is not considered a core math credit, but is considered elective math credit.. You are responsible to check with your college!

  31. Math Options • See math teacher for their recommendation • Pathway is generally Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II • Reminder: Algebra I taken in middle school counts as elective credit, not math credit • Geometry taken in middle school counts for math credit

  33. SCIENCE – 2 credits • Physical Science and Biology for graduation, BUT …for colleges: 3-4 years of lab science • Chemistry or Conceptual Chemistry are highly recommended. • Biology in Gr. 9 and Chemistry in Gr. 10? • MUST take a Physics course to graduate (or take Physical Science).

  34. SCIENCE (con’t) • Conceptual Chemistry is a college-prep chemistry course (not for a science-related field). Some NWTC programs will not accept this. • It is required that students have COMPLETED at least Algebra before taking a chemistry or physics course. • It is recommended that you complete Chemistry and Biology before taking Advanced Biology.

  35. Personal and Financial Literacy .5 credit • Test out option before senior year. • The test-out option is offered in December • Students must score 70% or better to earn a “P” and not have to take the class. • Credit is not given.

  36. World Language • UW-Madison requires 2 years but prefers 3 • UW-Eau Claire requires 2 years. • Other colleges require you take 2 years on campus if you don’t enter with it.

  38. NEW Classes and Course Changes cont. Business Education • Accounting 1 (CEP) – Starting in 2011-12, no longer counts for .5 math credit • College Accounting – Must pass Accounting 1 first. Can take AP Accounting test after completion of course. Replaces Comp. Acct. 2 and 3. No math credit given. No Comp 2 and 3. NOTE: Starting in 2011-12, Business and Marketing Math will no longer count for .5 math credit

  39. Physical Education 1.5 credits • PE 12 is an elective credit, not a class to fulfill a requirement. • You may also take any of the other PE choices except PE 9 for elective credit.

  40. SCIENCE • Chemistry is required before AP Chemistry • Physics is not required before AP Physics • Talk to teachers for their recommendations

  41. NOTE: Principles of Engineering taken at East, SW, or West High will receive one credit of science elective upon successful completion (PLTW) • Students planning to pursue a nursing degree must have C.N.A. certification (2-hour Nursing Assistant block) prior to applying to the college
